Using Boom Sprayer and 2,4-D with HARD Water

Getting ready to spray the hay field down here in Florida for those pesky weeds. Going to use a 110 gallon boom sprayer. Unfortunately, the only water I have access to is pretty hard water. I've heard that the hard water can prevent 2,4-D from being 100% effective.

I was wondering if there is an additive to be mixed in with the water and 2,4-D to help minimize the impact of hard water. Any suggestions?

You fellas please be real careful handling that 2,4D. I've heard it may be linked to Parkinsons disease. We used it on the farm and my Dad suffered terribly. Parkinsons doesn't kill you, it just wears you down and you fall prey to somethin' else. Gloves and respirator, probably a good idea for any chemical handling.

From the time 2,4-D became avaible (Dad started spraying it I think in about 1950) it was always used in hard water (well water) we did not know of anything else. Never thought to use cystern (rain) water

I spray 2,4-D every year with hard water and have never seen a problem. Same with round up. If the hard water evaporates out of the sprayer the minerals will clog up the screens and nozzles. Maybe some water is harder than others and could be a problem. Maybe it depends on what the mineral is causing the hardness.

Amonium sulfate at 17lbs/100gal of water is what is recommended for Roundup. I would think you would get the same result with 2-4-D

A few questions about ammonium sulfate:

1. Since it is typically in granular form, do you soak it in a bucket of water before putting it into the spray tank and adding the rest of the water?
2. I wonder how quickly it disolves in water?
3. Should I worry about the ammonium sulfate destroying my PTO pump or causing significant corrosion to the metal components of the sprayer?

Spray grade amonium sulfate will dissolve almost as fast as you can pour it in the tank. We are running 85lbs. per tanks load and never have any problems.

Where do you get spray grade ammonium sulfate?

Coop or spray dealer or place where I got the glyphosate.

Ag Depots is one source I've used. I see it in Thiesen's at a high price.

Yes dissolve it in bucket of water first. Takes about 1 minute.

i've put mineral oil in my pumps after using metal attacking chemicals...so far so good...never used ammonium sulfate tho so i'm not 100% sure mineral oil would work but it sure wont hurt.

I don't know about 2,4-D having a problem with hard water, but hard water will kill off glyphosate. The solution for glyphosate is a couple pounds of Ammonium Sulfate per quart of glyphosate, but mixed well in the water before the glyphosate goes in. The AMS ties up the hardness ions and also tricks some weeds like velvet leaf to accept the glyphosate better.

a surfactant probably will help you get better coverage, but what exactly causes the hard water to interfere with 2,4-D? is it the minerals in the water or distribution problems?

With glyphosate, its that the hardness ions (and dirt) tie up glyphosate so it can't work.

I dissolve the whole day's worth of AMS in an open topped plastic barrel. I don't let any of my spray materials get to metal, everything is plastic, even the pump (Shurflo). Except four SS bolts in the tank bottom and the pressure gauge.
