electric motor on auger

I have a 30'x6" auger that I use to fill my bulk bin with. I want to put an electric motor on it so I don't have to mess with starting a tractor in the winter. Do you think a 1hp motor is enough? I usually get 1 ton of corn/oats/protein in a gravity flow wagon so I can easily control the flow and not overload it. And it will be 110 volt. Thanks.

I think a 1hp would very marginal.

What kind of amps do you have available? You mentioned 110v. This will imply you don't have 220 nearby.....

In my experience, 20 amp breakers have a very hard time handling a hard pull of a 1hp motor.

If you can hard-wire 30 amps 110v, you could get a 1.5 or 2 hp motor and maybe get that to work.

I run a 5 inch 20 foot auger with a 1 hp, and that works fin, but..... 1/3 longer, and an inch bigger, that would be asking a lot.

I don't plan on running it at full capacity, was planning on just trickling it in, no hurry have plenty of time. That's how I do it now with a 20'x4" auger and a worn out 1/2 hp motor. Thinking of going with a gas motor anyway to run a water pump with also, cheaper than a big electric.

Agree with the others, you need at least a 3hp, maybe a 5hp motor to pull that auger right. Am using a 5hp on a 6" x 27' and it works good. SIL is using a 3/4hp on a 6" x 21' moving pelleted feed and can easily overload that motor if not very careful.

If you have a 1 horse laying around you could get it to work by gearing it down enough with pulleys but if you have to buy a motor anyway you might as well buy a 3 horse which should be plenty.

i dont think 1 hp is going to do it. my neighbor has a 45ft auger he runs a 7.5 hpp 3ph motor on it. i think you should be looking at least a 5 hp motor.
