Vermeer bailer# 5031, Good, Bad, or Ugly?

I hope I got the model no. right. This round bailer has been sitting outside unused for many years and I'm considering to buy it. It's owned by a not in residence type. Neighbors say the belts are gone. Anyone have any comments about this model, and what to check out on it,good/bad features value etc. Thanks

Probably a 504I, which is a good baler. I would guess new belts cost at $800, but some dealers have used one availiable. Belts need to be cut to the proper length according to the book.
Bearings are the main thing to go out on those balers, particularly the front top and bottom roller bearings.
One check for wear is to look at the sprockets the chains run on. If the tips of the teeth are sharp, the baler has a lot of wear.
See if pto shaft is complete and if gear box is missing.
The bearings on the rollers inside the back lid are a pain to replace. See if rollers can be turned by hand.

If it is in the condition you describe, I wouldn't give more that junk price for it.

Now, you may mean a 403 which made a smaller bale and I don't know anything about them.

Thanks KEH. Your post got me to realize it's a 503L, not a 5031 and when I did a search on this site for the proper model, I got a lot of info. I'll check out this bailer for sharp sprocket teeth (like old trail bikes) bearings and rollers that roll, complete pto shaft and gearbox presence as per your suggestion.

The bale is a Vermeer 503I. It makes a bale 5"tall and 3" wide. Vermeer only made about 200 of these balers. They make a nice bale. The belts are 6" wide and should be 424" long. The 3 ply Legg belts are $120 each.
