I just bought a John Deere single row planter. At least, I believe I bought one. I was wondering if anyone knows what model it is. I would like to get a manual off Ebay if possible. Thanks.

I takes lustran b style plates, if that helps.

It looks to me as if the row unit may have been from a 490. It has been much adapted, and it looks like a good job. Having said that, there would be no "owner's manuals" that would cover settings, I think. Decide what spacing you want and test the unit by dropping the seed on top of the ground. Change sprockets until you get your desired spacing. Up until perhaps 1960 or so, we used "runners" like that and disk openers later. In my experience, the runners work fine unless you have too much residue. Hope this helps.

go to a jd dealer and ask them if you can look through their planter books. you should find it there. there is a man that advertises a lot on here who makes upo one row units. look under implement photos for sale and see if you see one like it there.

I would agree with Paul, probably started life as a 494 or something like that. It is definately not a 70 or 71. The problem with a planter like that is it looks like you get one setting and thats that. No way to change seed spacing settings.

Well, it's made up from a JD planter, perhaps a 4 or 6 row 494 or something like that.

The 3pt is homemade.

I suspect the chain drive is home made as well. I see he included sprockets for changing seeding rate. No disk openers, just the runner. They are very popular in some areas, and don't see many of them in my soil types.

Not that that is a bad thing, but you won't really find a manual for 'this model'.

Or maybe it is an older JD single row unit planter, I'm not so up on JD stuff.

Had some once similar to that but it's not the 70 or 71 flex planter.

Yeah, the 70 & 71 have an enclosed chain drive, the 71 has a spring tensioner, the 70 is manually adjusted.

Nasty weather here, so about all I have to do is watch EBAY for bargains. (Haven't seen any in ages) In recent days I've seen a couple Deere single row planters sell. One was a #71 and the other was a #25 unit planter. Manuals for #71's are on EBAY all the time. (Both use type B plates by the way, as does most Deere plate planters)

Probably model 71 or 81 row unit. So look for those manuals and see if the picture on one or the other matches your planter unit.
