I posted this in the John Deere section but got no response, so am going to try here.

I happened to rescue a JD #6 sickle mower today from the torch at the scrap yard. Would like to know if manuals are still out there for this mower. I don't bleed green, but just could not see the torch put to that mower since it is missing only a few parts. I am asuming that parts are still out there for the mower. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sorta off topic but have to add it. I bought one (well used JD) and was on the way back to the house after using it the first time; becoming familiar with it. I had the sickle VERTICAL like in the picture.

I was driving down a fence row with the fence on the same side as the sickle bar. I don't know about where you live, but in N. Texas trees grow on fence rows; BIG trees with BIG limbs..... .....need I say more? Ever see cast iron split open?

A polebarn door frame works, as well, to tear up a mower in "transport position".

You need to keep the knife sharper. Then it will be able to cut those low-lying thick limbs. Just Kidding!

Yours probably broke at the yoke where the cutter bar is secured by two round pins.

One of my 3 Stooges rules is never back the tractor with the cutter bar on the ground.

I broke the yoke where the cutter bar is secured by two round pins.

After inspecting the damage, it was evident that the yoke had been broken before by another stooge.

I have a couple of them I still cut hay with mine I was able to get almost any part from local JD dealer had to wait a week but they can get almost anything. Yahoo JOHN DEERE PUBLISING and they will have all the books you need I think mine was $30. good luck. I am in OKC and know where there are a couple at in a junk yard if you need something.

Take another look at the upper cover (lid) on top of the gearbox housing on your mower.

It should have JOHN DEERE, a four-legged deer jumping over a log, and MOLINE, ILL.

Part No. Z 1051 H should be on the upper cover.

This will make your mower a #5 Caster Wheel Power Mower.

The manuals for the #5 mower were printed between 1936 and 1956. There are a few differences between the older and newer mowers. These manuals are available on eBay at auction from $1.99 to $19.00 depending on the seller.

Many of the parts can be found at SickleService.com.

Tractor Supply is a good source for many parts.

There are also some forum members that may be able to provide parts.

These are good mowers and will do you a good job once you get them set up correctly.

Thanks for saving the mower from the scrap man and mainland China.

Hope this helps.

Are you sure it is not a No. 5, or a # 9 . 5 has caster tail wheel , 9 is a 3pt. mount.

I am NOT familiar with a #6 Mower. Is that a drawn "horse mower"?

It does not seem to be listed at DEERE Techpubs, but have you tried calling them @ 1-800-522-7448 to see if they can assist you?
