What years was the 124 twine baler made, how expensive and what is the availability of parts?
Is this a good dependable baler?
What are the good and bad points of this machine?

Would this be a good model to purchase to do some custom work with?

The 124 was made from 1975 to 1982. If your doing
custom baling, it better be a low use baler that
you are considering because the age would be high.
You might be better off looking for a newer JD or
NH baler. MF made a pretty good baler but total
production was far less so replacement parts, both
new and used, will be harder to come by. The MF
224 was a later version of the 124 which was a
decent baler as well.

I have a massey 124. Its a good baler, it will make nice tight bales. parts are still available from AGCO. The only problem"s I have run accross is if you try to bale to much too fast, or if your wind rows are wide as the baler is not as wide as newer models other than that it works good.

I had a MF 124 about 10 years ago. Bought it on a lark because it was cheap compared to every other brand I had looked at. Plus it was in very good shape, low use. I baled a LOT of hay with it for several years and I was impressed (I'm usually a John Deere man). In fact, if they would have still been making them at the time, I would have bought a new one. The only "complaint" I had was the narrow pickup, but if you find a 128 or 228 baler, its the same machine with a wider pickup. Also, MF sold the baler design to Gehl in the early 1990's and they sold it for awhile so if you run across one of those balers they are the same machine. If it has been taken care of, I wouldn't be scared of either brand.
