I was at an auction site today that had several old JD plows on site. There was a 4 bottom and two 5 bottoms. The 4 had the small solid bar beam running across the frame. The 5s had the large box tube instead. I'm not famaliar with the model numbers, but all of them had trip bottoms. Then I stumbled across a 4bottom 3point mounted plow that had the trip bottoms. I don't ever remember seeing trip bottoms on a pull type plow before today. Have I just been missing it all these years or are they less common?

John Deere made lots of pull type plows with trip bottoms. I have a 3-14" pull type with the box beam and trip bottoms. My brother has a 3-14" pull type with the small solid bar frame. I can't really tell the difference in the performance of the plow, between the two. I also have two John Deere semi-mounted plows with the big box beam ( I guess I just like collecting plows).

Bob in ND....in answer to your question, I liked both plow tractors, but would have to say I liked the M better for overall operating convenience. Power seemed pretty similar. The first 70 was a diesel (the pony engine seemed to give problems frequently); later, a gasoline 70 was in use for awhile. You're right, those youthful memories of farming are unforgettable, and nostalgic!

The one thing I can say about JD trip bottom plows is that they don't always trip. Great carnage can follow!

Yes I did. I was amazed at how much everything brought. I new when that partial B carb brought $100 and the rusted up/seized up 2 cyl 3rd link brought $240, it was going to be a long day. I was able to get the items I went for. I ended up just buying them from the two gentlemen that bought the contents of shed and the junk pile beside it. I happen to know the man that bought all of the JD plows quite well...Let's just say that he has close to 2 dozen different JD plows now. 1-5 bottom;pull type rope trip;pull type hydraulic; semi- mounted; fully mounted;as well as disc plows. he didn't get near the bargain today I think he was hoping for...NO ONE DID. How did your day go as far as buying?

I thought that there were probably some burried treasures around there. I kept looking for the 800 or 801 hitch that to match the manual, but I never found it. I only bought food and drink, but I needed it for the walk that I had to make. A friend of mine bought some saddles that he thought were bargains. I had a good time talking to folks. Many couldn't believe the shape that place was in, but I like exploring places like that. One thing that didn't hit me right off is that there wasn't a barn of any size on the place. That says that everything had spent it's whole life outside. Really it was in decent shape considering that.

I have a John Deere 3-14 pull type. Trip bottoms and hydraulic lift. Bought new in 1956 by my grandfather. I think it is a 555, but don't know that for sure, and to far away to look.

My father bought a new JD 3-14" pull type plow with trip bottoms back in 1960. I remember spending untold hours plowing with that in my junior and senior high years, behind a Farmall M mostly, and sometimes a JD 70. A good plow, in my opinion...can't recall the model number, but it had one square beam across the top. We used a trash rake in cornstalk ground, else it would plug quite often, as nearly all pull-types did. I was able to buy a 2-16's #444 pull-type John Deere with hydraulic lift and trip bottoms, which is fun to plow the garden with, behind my IH Super H or Ford 960.

Bluehorse,
I have a 44H JD 3-bottom and an M Farmall that I pulled it with last year. I have a 44h JD 4-bottom that I pulled with my JD 70 gas the year before, too much plow for the tractor. I would think the 3-bottom and 70g would be ideal. What did you like better, the M or 70? I grew up on a 4010 and 4-bottom. I can still smell the diesel and slough weed.

I take it you were at Harry Jackson's looking around yesterday. Will you be going this morning? Wonder what those plows will bring?

Yes, and I went back. I thought that everything sold well. I think the 5 w/tube beam brought $700 and the 4 with no tailwheel brought $400something. I didn't watch the other 5 sell, but everything that I watched brought more than I expected. Who would have thought that those stuck 2 cylinders would have brought up to $1750? I was shopping for bargains, and didn't find any. Althought that #71 planter brought $175, which it was probably worth it, but need some work and parts. Did you go?

JD made trip bottoms starting 1955 with the triple no. series (444 thru 777), most plows were trip bottom, but stiff standards & shear bolt type were available. last trip bottom plows were models 3100 pull type & 1450 semi mount, about 1980.

Plows,,,, Solid bar on top with trip bottoms could be the 555 or 666 (4btm). they also made a 777 model. The next vintage up had the box beam,, kindof like two pieces of channel welded face to face. The model numbers were 620 thru 690, depending on size and options. Generally, the early 600's ran small tail wheels and the later ones ran the full size. Deere has continued to make drawn moldboard plows. Current production model is 3710.

I have a 3 bottom with trip bottoms. I can't tell you the model # off the top of my head, but was told that they were the last pull type plows produced by Deere. They were for the new generation tractors I think.
