JD 71 Planter: Seed Hoppers

I'm going to an auction tomorrow where there's a 2 row 3pt planter w/JD #71 units. It's been sitting out in the weather for some time, but everything seems to be functional. All of the rubber looks good, the units drive okay, and the disk openers are free. The seed hoppers are steel and the bottom 3/4 of an inch has some small holes rusted in them. It looks like to me I could shorten the hoppers by 1inch or so to get back into the very sold metal and reattach. Has anyone ever done this or will I have to get new hoppers? During inspection one of the small spring clips that holds the plate/assembly in place from the bottom broke. Can small stuff like this be replaced? I'm hoping that it will sell at a price that a guy could make it mechanically sound.

Shorten them like that or should be plenty used ones at salvage yards or implement yards. They also made some larger fiberglass or plastic hoppers for later 71 planters and should fit yours.

My Dad did this very thing with a set of 71 hoppers and they look like new. He also shortened up the "seed level gauge" so it functioned correctly.

Most of the parts are still available through Deere, or, as mentioned, Yetter. Parts inside the seed box is same as most Deere plate type planters.

I have never done it, but it seems reasonable that you could shorten the seed boxes. It is common to remove and replace worn box bottoms. The spring clips ought to be available from a JD dealer.

Yetter has taken over the manufature of these, so they might also be a parts source.....
