Does anyone know how much horsepower a tractor must have to pull and run a typical JD 14T baler?

I baled hay for years with a JD 14T and a Farmall H, never had any trouble - pulled a wagon behind, wife usually drove while I loaded. Like the others say, live PTO would have been nice..

If you have flat land and drop the bales on ground without a wagon you should be OK. Not sure if your rated hp is "engine" hp or "PTO" hp. Smallest tractor I've square baled is a MF 135 Diesel at 38 hp PTO, and that worked marginally OK in my area (some hills) but not as good as larger tractors at 50-60 hp range. If you really plan on baling hay each year and have some hills or want to use a wagon you should consider a bigger tractor in the 50 hp range, which won't have to work as hard and will also be safer since it has more as* (weight).

I've used my farmall M before but only in a pinch when the pto bearing went out on my 1755d Oliver . It pulled the baler and wagon till it was full and brought it all back to the barn , about a 1/3 of a mile up the road . The problem I had was dull knives on the baler and to fast of first gear as result with the M . The knives have since been sharpened and the 1755 pto fixed . With larger windrows you'll need a slow first gear for a 14t baler if you're using less horsepower with no live pto . Poke the link for a picture of my small field of third cutting of 06 . ...Randy

Pulled a NH 68 Hayliner with a H farmall for 8 years on rolling hills with medium and some heavy winrows of alfalfa and brome and never had any problem with power. Live pto would have been nice at times.

We ran a 14T on a JD 50 for years. Uncle would never pull a wagon behind though. Now my son and I run a NH 268 hayliner with 100 blae hay wagon behind with a JD B.. (some hilly land!) Can be done if you are careful, even without live PTO. 20 Hp should get you by on a 14T, However, the mass of your tractor will be a determining factor on how well you can handle the baler, and if you can pull a loaded wagon behind. Balers don't take a lot of power, as long as you feed reasonable windrows. Not those double/triple things for round balers.

Rich, you have enough HP to run that baler with your Kubota, the question is, do you have to go up and down hills and are you pulling a wagon or dropping the bales on the ground? Just running a baler you should be fine, but if you add a wagon you will have a lot of weight behind a relatively light tractor. You would probably be okay on flat ground but hills may put you in a bind when you have to stop going downhill. It may be a bit hard on that tractor going up a hill with the baler and a full wagon also.

I used a wd allis on my 14T when i had the baler. Thinking about getting another one so even if i do get a hesston stackhand 10 just for the extra small bales for handyness.

As per the owners manual for a 14T. The engine that can be mounted on it is a 17HP or if using a PTO drive set up a 2 bottom plow tractor or larger. That said I have found in the past that say a ford 841 will handle one but its still all it wants. But an Oliver 77 will play with one. The big thing is having live PTO. If you don't have live PTO it makes it a lot harder to use a baler because if the windrows get big it can/will clog the pick up and being able to stop the tractor with out stopping the PTO makes a world of difference

In some of John Deere advertising, they show a JD 40, (25 HP)making hay with a 14T. As long as the hay is dry, and you use 1st gear, a 40, 420, or 430 can handle the job. I have used a 430 with no problem. Just don"t be in a rush!

Does it have live PTO??? If it does yes but it would still be about all it wants and you would probably not want to pull a wagon behind the baler or if you have any hills the whole set up could push you around in ways that would not be safe

Yup, that is an intelligent answer. A 17 HP engine may power it but a 17 HP tractor will not in my experience. I have hooked this baler to a 20 HP 4WD and was quick to give up on that idea.
The IPTO is a must. Currently we use a tractor that dynoed at around 50 PTO HP and it is none to much tractor for the baler. Your newer 35 HP should do it but watch going down the hills with a lot of weight behind you.
