What will you be charging to bale both big rounds and small squares this year? How would you figure a fair rate per hour if charging by the hour?

Last year I charged $1.90 per small square for cutting, raking, baling put in my bale baskets in the field and the customers takes it from there. For 3 years before last year I baled small squares for $1.85. Round baling 4x4s is $17/bale including cutting and raking, customer is in charge of moving bales. For baling only I charged $10/bale last year.

WOW. 1.90 in the field? That is way over the rates around here. You can buy hay for 2.50, that someone else cut, raked, baled, and hauled to the barn, stacked. Tom

$1.00 a bale cut, baled, and stacked at the edge of the field. I add milage if they want it stacked more than 1/2 mile from the field. I'll also do it for $60 an acre, but I don't do any by the hour.

bc in tn - been there done that. i gave a man 50 bales once just so i wouldn't have to go back and rake and bale his "hay" when i got there it wasn't anything but the tops of dead fescue to cut and not much of that. it made him mad when i told him i wouldn't come back and bale it. but after he got home and walked the field he saw what i was talking about. nothing makes your day any more than a 6 inch cedar post and a mile of barb wire rolled up around the rollers on your conditioner. i use to bale for the public and ran two tractors, two mowers/conditioners, two rakes (puled together with home made trailer connecting them), either a sq baler or round bailer, trucks and trailers to haul equpment around and/or hay and a truck and tool trailer to keep things up with. about 32 tires i had to roll to just do the job not counting rounding up hands and buying their lunch. then some people wanted to try and jew me down on my price. baled one mans hay one dy with storm coming by tieing a log to the rim of the baler and using it as a crutch to get-er-done. don't think i want to go back to doing tat again.

7812 Last year I charged 1:00 per bale just for baling,no accumulating and stacking on a rack about 55 to 60 lb bales. This was with wire tie.
There is not allot of square baling done here, but no one complained about the rates.

Not sure what I am going to charge in 2008, 2007 rates were 17.50 for 5 by 5 bale, 20.00 for 5.5 by 5 bale and 22.50 for 6 by 5 bale. This includes cutting raking and baling. I figure it be close to 20 dollars for a 5 by 5 bale
For square bales I got 1.50 wire tied around 55 to 60 lbs bales in 2007. Not sure how much I will go up this year, got to price wire first. This is in north Texas

Go to MU's extension web site they have all the custom rates for just about anything. Just Google, "University of Missouri Extension Custom Rates" or some variation there of.

I had some custom baling done in 2006 and as I recall, I was charged $25/acre for mowing/conditioning, $5/acre for raking and $10/bale. It worked out to $34/baled ton, $45/acre or $22/bale.
The bales averaged 1340 lbs.

Here we are getting between $2.00-$3.50 per bale small square 55-60 # on the ground just a different market {HORSEY PEOPLE} This would be their own field.Out of my own fields $4.50 per bale they pick-up. Any that doesn't sell goes in the barn to be sold to Feed store that sells @ $8.95 per bale. 30 plus years doing this and still have more business than I like.Have seen at least 6 "custom" balers come and go.Each thinking to make a quick dollar old equipment cheap price dissatisfied people. Now just 2 of us left as another retired last year.I'm sure someone will step up to try and replace him.

Custom work, 2008, diesel under 3.35 per gallon delivered:

4x4 rounds 8.00 each, up from 7.00 in 2007. Minimum charge 320.00

small squares, 90 cents on the ground, 1.00 each with wagon (no labor). Minimum charge 270.00.

As to calculate, I estimate fuel consumption, repairs, and depreciation from the previous years. My labor at 30.00 per hour and include something for moving equipment, checking out fields, and all the random driving and calling I have to do.

By the hour, 85.00 for the round baler, 75.00 for the square baler.

What percent of your baling is done by the hour? Are you finding most clients receptive to the hourly rate? What are your minimum's when working by the hour?

Very few want it by the hour. I post it since most everything else I do is an hourly rate (batwing, dozer, skid loader). On a percent basis 5-10% maybe, some years not any. Minimum on either baler and the skid steer is 4 hrs, with the clock starting when I get there. If its more than 15 miles the clock starts starts at 15 miles. I'm far from the cheapest around here, in fact Im one of the most expensive, but I turn away more jobs than I take. Just not enough time to do it my way. Thats one reason I get so much return business. I tell all my clients that with me they are guarenteed a sober operator, no migrant workers, insured, there when I say I will be, and a complete backup line of equipment just like whats coming onto the job in case of breakdowns.

Hayman:
I understand exactly what you are saying.
A few years ago I bought all my own hay equipment. Unfortunately, I just couldn't find a hay baler in my community that would do what he said he would do. I payed $1.00 a square to get it on the ground without complaint. I'd have payed $2.00 a bale to a man who would do what he said he do. I often get asked to custom jobs - I just politely tell 'em I don't bale for the public - seems to make folks mad. Mostly folks wanted me to bale weeds in some very questionable looking fields. I've said before on this forum - I've never sold a bale. If I look at my total costs in equipment, seed, fertilizer, fuel - I can't even bale my hay for less than $5.00 a bale. However, I guess over time the cost per bale will decrease. I can't imagine being in another man's hayfield with a cloud coming up and the baler eating one of his metal fenceposts and the parts dealer being an hour away....I'd pay you what you asked and I'd consider it a good value.
