I have an opportunity to buy an old Ford haybaler that is in very good conditon. It is a one owner baler and has always been stored when not in use. Can one still get parts for these old balers such as needles and knotter parts?

Had a 530 ford baler. Make one, break one, it is now in a better place(may have come back as a toyota car) Last time I used it I was crawling along babying the old girl making the odd bale(and breaking the even ones) I was 15 and getting mad so I stomped the throttle on the 574 IH and grabbed a gear. Well, that old beater started thumping and shaking and tying bales. Over 900 with out missing a one. Baler was so wore out the only thing that kept it tying was a steady, heavy load pulling the knots tight. Field was too rough to stay in the seat, traded it in on JD

What model is it? Parts availability depends a lot upon the series. For example, I have a Series 504, Model 250, (late '50s/early '60s) for which I can't even get the pickup hay bands any more. When I first got it in 1983 I could for a reasonable price. As far as I know the pickup teeth are still available for a reasonable price. (Several years back I bought a bunch for around $3.00 if my memory serves me). Needles and most knotter parts are not available. Same for the PTO overrun clutch. Clutch discs are available from NH, as are universal parts and bill hooks.

I now also have a late model 532 (one of the last models Ford sold before picking up NH) with bale ejector. This one has the optional 6-bar pickup with rubber mounted teeth. These pickup teeth from NH run around $16.00, from Shoup around $3-something. Some knotter castings are available for this baler, as are the needles (over $300 each I heard).

Both of these baler series were manufactured by Long, private labeled for Ford.

My recommendation - Stay with John Deere (the most common and popular balers here in New England) or NH. Parts readily available, plus lots of parts/salvage units around.

I've been able to get most of the parts I need from New Holland. I've also been able to find just about anything for them used at salvage yards, but there were a lot of ford balers in my area.

Yes... I've got one of the old orphans. It's a good old baler for what it was. Most of the perishable parts are still available, but things like the pickup teeth are VERY expensive. I think most of the knotter stuff is available and basically any of the other stuff that was outsourced to begin with... but anything that's related tot he structure of that machine... YOU CAN FORGET ABOUT BUYING FROM NEWHOLLAND. I need a knife guide and some shims for mine and the only way I'll get that is if I make it. She's working good enough for now but if I was to do any serious amount of work with the baler it would need to be fixed.

In all seriousness... if you are to buy this baler to use, it needs to be cheap... as in under 500 bucks for good working condition kinda cheap. Otherwise it's just a novelty that you play with.
If I was looking for a baler today it wouldn't be a Ford in spite of the fact that I think it's still a good baler.
I'd want an inline Case/Hesston first followed by a NewHolland...
I know you're not going to be baling much, but try not to tie up much money in ole blue there...

I think there are a -FEW- parts still available. Maybe ask over on the Ford forum, as a couple guys that frequent it have these balers. I think RodinNS has one.
