Removing Thatch

I have 80 acres, about half woodlots and half old fields. It hasn't been tilled in close to 35 years. There's lots of thatch from weeds, grass, etc. Would a landscape rake on a 3ph clean the thatch up? I do plan to disc this spring. Will that take care of the thatch? Some will be eliminated in a controlled burn. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also does anyone have a good method to get rid of dewberry, those berry plants that run on the ground as opposed to erect canes?

Mostly our land is for wildlife. I don't expect to make any money or raise any cash crops, except corn, milo, etc. for the critters.

Roundup, followed by a European, deep, long frame, long body MOLDBOARD plow. That should dispose of everything you can drive over. You might set fire to it first to clean up the trash, let it green up, then hit it with 1.25 quarts of roundup per acre to kill the vegetation off. The plow will look after the rest.
If you don't want to use Roundup, set fire to it and then plow it...

Definitely a hay rake - probably a PTO powered one would be best. Second best would be a wheel rake. I tried this on my yard once with an old ground drive rake and found that it would works better with a small wheel rake.

i was going to suggest a hayrake too, only if you didn't want to bale it just keep going around and around in circles and keep making the windrow bigger and bigger, then burn it. getting it up off the ground and letting it dry a day or so would make it burn easier and get rid of more of the thatch. you may have to run the rake so low that it will kick up a lot of dust and probably break a few teeth off during the raking, but i think it would work well this way.

2-4-d amine kills dewberry on my place...mix a lil Dawn dishwashing liquid in mix to make it stick better.
if theres nuthin but berries use Roundup instead.

First thing comes to my mind is sheep and goats, if you fenced it off got good gaurd dog. Probably need more than you'd want to deal with though.

If you have the equipment you could treat it like hay and perhaps sell it as mulch.
