Well, I have finally gotten some time to get my Dad's old model 46 IH baler going (I hope). I've ben putting it off due to lack of time. When we put it up about 15 years ago it workied ok except it would miss a knot on the left side every once in a while if standing behing the tractor. I have changed the fluids and greased it. I have not put new twine in it yet. I ahve new twin knives to install and have obtained an operators manual and a separate manual for the knotter system as I have no experience working on them. Is there anything I need to be aware of since it has been sitting in the barn for so long thatmight be froze up. It turns ok by hand. I just don't want to compound my problem with my lack of knowledge. Any advice appreciated. It looks like getting the new twine in the tying mechanism might be a little tricky, but I have the step by step instructions so I gues we'll see. Have a good day.

I had one, called it my knotless 46, finally got it to bale 2 bales with knots on both sides and took it to auction. Worst machine I've ever owned too bad my neighbor bought it at the auction. poor bugger.

I've had a 27, 46 ,47 and a 430, all good balers. Clean and oil all moving parts. Make sure the hay dogs are all working properly and have good return springs in them. Use only IHC shear pins and tighten them to spec. It would be best to use the twine it was set up for, ie 7200 or 9000, sisal or plastic if you know, or set twine disks to what you will use, (plastic is best). Sharpen or replace the knives on the plunger and make sure all the plunger rollers are turning and the wood blocks hold the plunger in allignment and snug in chamber. If possible replace knotter knives with the newer style with the replacable blades. Turn baler over by hand and run needles thru knotters and make sure the baler is timed. And have fun....James

I've got a IH 46 that I started using the end of last year, and it works very nicely. As far as getting the twine in...same as any other baler, just thread the twine through the needles, and then tie it off to something under the baler. Then, trip the tying mechanism while the PTO is running, and you'll be all set. The only difference with the 46 compared to some newer balers is that it uses the pressure of the hay to push the twine off the hooks...so unless you've got hay going into the machine..the twine isn't going to release from the knotters. Good luck. Parts are still very available...My local CaseIH dealer here in Northern VA had everything I needed.

Got a couple of them, baled with the one a year ago and with the right twine it did very well. But got a New Holland that I am going to use so I am thinking about taking the IH 46s to the scrap yard. With the price of scrap now it seems the best thing to do, but I do hate to destroy a working baler. How about some advice?????

I baled hay two summer ago with a similiar baler had been sitting on blocks for 30 years. It is a Roanoake but is very similiar. This is my number one advice to you..... ....buy the best twine you can find! My old baler did fine on the first part of ordinary twine but when it got down to the last part we were missing bales like crazy and the twine was no good. It will save you alot of headache.

Baled thousands of bales with 45 and had a 46 which was improved. When they are properly adjusted according to the book and knotters are clean they work fine. Out of adjustment they will miss many. A good baler.

ihc 46 baler now that brings back memories, all bad. always had problems tieing. get one side to tie then the other side gives up.was faster to just walk beside it and tie the twine manually before it got pushed out .they were a slow baler, soon as you got in heavy hay it would break a shear pin. i am ihc but i swear this is one of the worst machines they built. later got a jd 24t and that was like in heavan, that thing did not stop.sat in the shed for about 10 years, pulled it out this summer greased it and put new twine in and baled some hay.just kept going like before, no problems.have not heard a good thing about the ihc 46.only that god dam pile of junk. it looked good but it sure was a pain in the asskme no questions about it. maybe you have a better one!

What grade of shear bolt were you using when it was breaking in thick hay? Also were you able to figure out why one side would tie when the other one wouldn't. It seemed like the tying problem was what we were having when we put it in the barn many years ago. I have never worked on it. At that time my job at 10 or 11 was to pick up and stack. I hope I have better luck than you did.
