Wasn't that long ago I would help bale in the summer for $5/hour. Nowadays you can't get these kids off thier a** and do anything. Thats why I use a baler w/thrower here in Central IL. Just cant get good help. Makes quick work on a patch when I go out with 3 wagons, fill them all and pull them in the barn and wait till the wife gets off work to help unload them.

Snakes under bales sure brings back memories. I was too young to go to the field alone to catch crickets under straw bales to sell to fishermen. My older sister had to go with me--until the day we found a blue racer under one of the bales. I was out of the cricket business.

i've never understood the reason for using a baler kicker to load hay. i don't see the labor savings after you do all the hitching and unhitching and stopping the baler. i'd rather keep my baler moving and load the hay by hand. i had a crew of kids that helped me all summer and we hauled a thousand bales everyday and up to 2000 if the barns were close and things went well. i cut and bailed for the public for 6 or 8 years. i never lost a customers hay due to getting it rained on after it was baled. i have turned over a few bales and found snakes under them and found the tail ends in other bales. yeah you look real close for the other end in another bale. don't carry that bale to the barn. the cows want eat a bit of it.

Andrew or Anyone;

As a teen I hauled hay during the summer. We always stacked it on a trailer, 125 bales to the load. These balers that kick the bales into a trailer seem very ineffiecient to me. It seems like it woiuld take a while to free the jammed bales. What is the advantage, besides not needing any kids to load the bales on a wagon? Just curious.

I like the kicker wagons, getting the bales off isnt too bad if the bales are tight and hold their shape. I personnally always use a hay hook when unloading to help with the "stuck"bales. I think they are more efficient. You can bale at a higher speed if the baler can handle it, where as a stack wagon you have to keep slow or you'll lose your bales, ruin your stck, or worse injure a person on the wagon.

A kicker wagon isn't really any harder to unload. You might have to pull on a few bales but not many. You save a couple of workers stacking them on the wagon, you pay for another piece of equipment that breaks occasionally. Take your pick.

I cant wait either, this year I will actually be able to run my own ground. No more renting it out, I will still help my freind get his crops in. Wish I had dirt like this. Rig is an Oliver 2050 with a Duetz -Allis "chisel-vator" Nice one pass tool.
Randy, What size disc is that and what model Oli is that?

Dave , That's a nice setup ! I like working class tractors ( and trucks and cars ) MUCH more than trailer queens ! Is that the ground you got ? Looks Good ! My tractor's a very late 1974 1755D with a fresh rebuild pulling a $300 Oliver 263 ( 20'8" , 9" spacing F&R ). This is the first time I used the disk after I bought it . This is the neighbors land , I only have 13 acres and not much use for a disk since it's in hay but I'll help where I can so I was turning corn stubble for him . The tractor had just over a hundred hours on the rebuild at that time ( Spring of 07 ) . Maybe this summer I'll go get it dyno'ed to find out what it's got for pto hp . It pulled this disk without much problem except the ground was wetter in some spots and I got to close and got stuck . I got out without help , I just waited a few days for it to dry some . It's tires are loaded and it has the 18.4-34 power-adjust wheels . ...Randy

I took this picture the first day in the field last spring. Its a long way off yet but I am looking forward to it but this morning I am headed out to blow some more snow. Oh well! bill
