I'm looking for an older used skidsteer about in the $5-6,000 range. I want it to be able to pickup a 1000 pound round bale and load it on a wagon. I figure it should have a 1200 pound breakout or better.
I don't really know that much about skidsteers. I think I would prefer a diesel, but maybe somebody could give me a good arguement for a gas. Anybody out there more experienced with skidsteers that would have any helpful advice would be appreciated. What are good ones and what are good ones to stay away from.

GLEANER
Keep in mind breakout ability is NOT lifting ,a machine will have more breakout ability than lifting ability

To me the most important considerations about a skid steer are condition and dealer suport. Your gonna need a good source of parts and you don't want to work on it all the time. Who do you want to get parts from and then hunt for a good used machine of that brand.

I bought a 4625SX Gehl in "98- was a 95 model. 46hp, rated to lift 1300 lbs, actual is double that. Very dependable machine- paid 13 grand, worth about 8500 today. 4cyl Kubota diesel. Case 45 series is also very popular. Stay away from the smaller, low hp ones, like the Case 1816- they can hardly turn themselves around on dry dirt without killing the engine- Same with a 1840. Contractor that built our house in 97 had one- always killed it just shoving dirt around. Get an 1845, etc.

Don't buy a Case. It's not the easiest to work on!

I have a Case 1845C with 4000 hours on it. You may be right about it being hard to work on. I don't know. Mine has been so reliable over the last five years, I've never had to work on it!

I put more hours on this skid steer than I put on my tractors. It will lift, carry and stack 1000 lb round bales all day long. I've been very pleased with it, and I haven't gotten in stuck (Where I couldn't get out) yet!

Unless you fall into a bargain (and that does happen) you need to double your budget to buy reliability. If you like twisting wrenches in an oily shoebox, buy a cheap SSL.

I'd definitely agree with that. Only thing I'd add is that you need to enjoy working upside down in an oily shoebox...
