Putting no-till on a IH 800

I am thinking about taking the dive into the no-till world. Fuel prices are pretty high so i figured i would get started while I know im still going to be farming for awhile. I have a IH 800 6 row planter with offset disk openers and the 900 updates on it. I was wondering how well these planters worked with using the Yetter 2960/2967 combo kit (trash whippers and coulter). Im not worried about outdating my planter becuase this same combo kit works on the newer 1200 series Case IH planters. Im guessing that I will need better down pressure springs. I heard that some planters dont work as well becuase they are not heavy enough. I would think my planter is heavy enough, but i dont know.. Tell me what you guys think, thanks.

I'd skip the coulter and just use a row cleaner. The coulters require alot of extra down pressure and with the offset opener disks on the IH planters they aren't needed to open the slot like with the other brands. We've been no-tilling with IH planters for over 10 years without coulters and I've never seen a need for them. I've no-tilled several thousand acres of 15" beans into heavy corn stalks with this planter since we built it back in '03 and the only time I've had problems closing the slot is when it's muddy enough I have to kick the mud off the tractor steps before getting out of the cab.

Yea, I have heard of people not even using trash whippers and just no-tilling with these planter because of the offset disk openers. Looks like you have a very nice setup. Is that a IH 900 or 950 planter getting pulled by a 5288/5488?

The planter is an 800 HRF converted from 12-30s to 24-15"s and the tractor is a 5488.

That is a really nice 5488 and looks like a 1066 on the seed tender. Looks kinda like Iowa to me. I'm in the hills though so I can't use such big equipment. I wanted a 5288 real bad, but I ended up setteling with a 1486. Did you end up going with yetter or a differnt brand with your trash whippers?

We are located in SEIA and have ground ranging from pretty flat to too steep to farm. We just run row cleaners on our corn planter which is a 7200 Deere. We've been running Martin's since '01 without any problems and I think they are built heavier than Yetter's.

did for a while with my 12 row 900 series. Biggest trouble you will have is closing the slot. I would go to spider wheels where you two little closing wheel are now. I did it for three seasons and give it up. ther just something about that one pass opening up the ground really makes all the difference. But wht do I know I quite corn and beans and concentrate on small bales hay period . Per acre much better pay back and input cost carries over for several years
