I have a John Deere Van Brunt grain drill. I am wanting to seed some switch grass this spring with it. Does anyone know what setting is used for switchgrass on these drills??? I have a chart in the manual but switch grass is not listed.

Switch grass is not fluffy ,it will go through the small grass seed boxes it is about the same size as alfalfa seed.I have seedsd over 3000 acre of CPR in Iowa all types of native grass and forbes. If you would like to seed another crop with it go ahead.

I have to agree with IaGary. In SW ND we mixed the grass seed with oats or barley as a cover crop. Weeds will easily out compete the grass. The cover crop suppresses the weeds and as a benefit can be cut as a hay crop. I would recommend that no one tries this with winter rye and fall planting.

Are you doing this for bio-mass fuel? in reply to JonB, 01-19-2008 14:37:19
I have heard a lot of buzz about switchgrass used for biomass for fuel production. Is that your mindset also? If so, I'd like to talk to you about it as I am considering doing that here in East Tennessee. There is supposed to be a production facility in the works near Knoxville, I think? Anyway, thanks for your time.
Walk in peace.

You may have to mix it with oats in the big hopper to seed it.

Which isn't a bad idea anyway. The oats serves as a cover crop to hold the weeds back the first year till the switchgrass gets started.

Switchgrass is to fluffy to put through the grass seed boxes.

All switchgrass I have seeded was with the oats.

It does take a lot of oats, maybe a bushel to the acre.

Unless you have seed that's had the awns chopped off the FB won't drill it. It will bridge and won't fall into the cups.
