I"m thinking about buying a Hesston 5580 round baler and i just dont know much about them. I"d like to know what to expect from that baler, some of the weak points, how nice of a bale does it make, what are some typical repairs and any other information you have. Thanks.

Was the 1st of 5 heston balers I've owned and I sure wouldn'i want another, it did make decent bales if you could start them . Mine had the better tye sytem put on after the first 200 bales, which helped some. Didn't own it longer enough to wear anything out. Ran with the short grass kit installed most of the time. There are better balers for sure in that time frame.
I currently run a heston 956. Good dealer!!!

I had a used 5580 for several years. I repaired as required and installed new belts on it, pickup up fingers, bearings and whatall. Biggest problem was getting it to start the roll and then start the tieing. My crop was sudan/sorghum hay and I usually cut it before it got too tall and the stems too thick. Should have been a piece of cake.

Would I buy it again, knowing what I know? No I'd do what I did and bought a JD 530 which walks circles around the Hesston. I paid $2500 for the Hesston and $5000 for the Deere and it was worth every penny of the difference..... did sell the Hesston for $3000 with the $1000 worth of new belts and all the repairs. I had to demonstrate it to the new buyer to sell it.
