Round bales w/ pick-up?

Anybody make a hitch to accomidate a bale spear for the back of their pick-up? A buddy of mine says he made one for his pick-up using a come-a-long to lift the bale. I am going over to see it tommorow, that would work good for me. He says he loads up bales and can drive right down the road with it.

How big of bales are you talking about and how far do you have to move them? If you've got a tractor with rear hydraulics, you can throw something together for a few bucks or less to move one at a time real quick. I can handle a 5ft (650+/- pound) bale in a couple of minutes. I've got a smaller tractor so need weight on the front but have a frontloader to offset.
I found this plan (hope it opens) that you could probably use as a guide to make something close to the tumblebug.

The platform for the tractor is two 4x4's that slide under the tractor and rest on the drawbar (close together in front and spread wide in the back) with a floor nailed across them. Let it down to ground level, flip the bale over on it, raise it and go (may loop a rope around it for safety).

check out perry-co. c?m ,under hay ride. sounds like what you are looking for . a self mounted unit that hooks over your goose neck ball,then has hyd. and lift like tractor three point.

hayray check out Butler Beds in Okla. I have one of those with a built in bale spears. I've hauled 1000's of bales plus pulled T-posts,carried cattle panels and raised implements to change flats. My 3/4 T pu frame isn't broken. Some company's make one for regular bed that fastens to gooseneck ball. Tx Jim

Watched Dad bounce a 1200 pound round bale off the tail gate of the GM 3/4. Looks like a smile now. You should have heard him cuss.

We have a tumble bug affair to unroll round bales, but we haven't been using it. Too much waste.

I'm thinking if I rigged up such a thing for one of Dad's trucks, well, that dog probably wouldn't hunt.....

Lots of trucks around here with them. Also lots of trucks around here with broken frames on them from hauling hay on them.

A number of the larger outfits around here use a bale unroller outfit on their 1 ton trucks. These can load and carry two large bales and unroll one at a time. Never have to get out of cab. Seems as though they are findin more and more uses for the one ton and less uses for tractor.

I have two trucks with bale spears on them, Will have another before too long. I find it hard to believe that there are so many that have not seen em. Around here you see emm everywhere.
I think I'm going to maybe be dealing in some of them. I do dable in bale forks, bale spikes and small stuff for tractors now.

Hayray, around here lots of folks use a trailer type hay carrier. Most of them use a crank ratcheting handle/cable affair like a boat trailer. You back it under the bale, crank it up, and off you go. Tires are about like car tires, they have brake lights, running lights, farm tags, etc. to make pulling down the road legal. Best part is you only need 1/2 ton pickup or SUV to pull them, and you can load them up ahead of time, like the day before and be ready to pull the next morning to go feed. Tom

Yep seen a good number of them home built. Ones I have seen used either a bale spear made for a 3 point or one made from an old axle from a big rig. The ones made from a 3 point spike seem to be easier to rig up then one that is 100% home made. I have modified a good number of them to fit a lot of thing

that is what he is using, a 3-pt bale spear connected to his reciever hitch. I am taking my spear over tommorow along with some steel and we are going to make one up for my truck. I guess we just need to make pivot pt.

I've seen a few down in the Ozarks. Not all that uncommon for some of those fellas not to have a tractor at all. The ones I've seen used a boat trailer winch.

I have seen slide-in units for the bed of a pickup that use either a winch or hydraulics to pick up the round bale.
