My uncle told me this and I've remembered it about sickle mowers of any type: When you pick that bar up to put in the vertical travel position, be very sure none of your fingers get in the way of the knives. The sickle usually moves a little inside the bar when the bar is raised. He almost got the end of his thumb cut off that way once.

Thanx for that tip. Been around old equip all my life and know how quick and bad you can get hurt. What is bad when people lose the 'fear' of this equipment and forget it can and will hurt you. Later. HB

sickle cutters will plug if you try to go back over an area that has been cut. don't go as fast as bushhogging and MAKE SURE there is NO obstructions in the field. if there are , then clearly mark them. a hidden stump or rock is not good on a sickle. keep ALL livestock, pets and CHILDREN away from the area when you are cutting. ALWAYS turn off tractor when working on the sickle, otherwise you might be fingerless or worse.

a pull type takes a little more skill to turn without missing hay. of course if it's got a cylinder on it you can raise it and make a circle and keep your corners fairly square. good luck and dont hessitate to ask us any questions. =)

Don't worry, I'm gonna ask questions!!! Been farming for 30 years but I'm tired of drought and $4 beans. Until last 2 years I had a 40+ bushel average in Southeast Missouri for wheatfield beans alone, then the &#@$# $%^ hit and I'm looking for something else. Just gonna try a little bit at a time and work my way up. Got a lot of horse people wanting me to grow hay for them. Thanx. HB

have you checked into the hay related sites? i've been wondering about hay driers and the like. louis bromfield of late malabar farm fame had a drier that he used for loose or chopped hay. and some guys are making them for big and small baled hay too ! this might help you beat the rain and keep your hay of better quality than the next guys! =) good luck. and have you thought about the bale baskets if you have trouble getting help to stack on the wagons? one guy made his out of wood and save the couple of thousand of buying a new steel one! and you dont need a thrower!!

Hay, I'm looking for a used basket too. They go for about $800-1000 here in sMN, but are few & far between. Wouldn't happen to have plans for one? :)
