Used minnesotas, e-z trail, a few knowles, and a few homebuilt jobs. If they are treated properly any gear worked well.

I've got quite a few different ones, but the one I like the most is a New Idea that I have. Instead of having a pipe that connects the two axles it has two heavy pieces of formed channel iron, one on each side. That sucker is stout.

First running gear I owned was an old style JD 6 ton. I was young and stooopid, wanted to see how fast it would trail (this was 24 years ago and Im 40 now). I can honestly say that it will track true (or would then) at speeds in excess of 85mph empty. Still trails good though I havent tried to approach even the posted speed in a few years. I've got a Bradford 8 ton that does good up to 20 mph loaded or 30 empty. I do like it though as the flat on it has 4x6x20 runners as opposed to 3x8x20s on the JD. Worst one I've got is an Electric. It wasnt much to start with and after replaceing both sides of the front axle where the spindles mount due to rusting up it really doesnt trail good now, maybe 10 mph tops and can back it at all. I think you could parallel park the JD.

I had my New Holland gear going 80 mph once years ago when I was in my twenties, didn't think it was stupid back then. Now that same gear doesn't track at 30.

Wonder why Westendorf isn't a contender ? I only have one gear - you guessed it - westendorf - I was told it was a good gear . Bent the rear axle last year with only 151 bales on it - about 6000 lbs . - Only three tons on a five ton gear . It'll still do the job but I am disappointed . I haven't pulled it down the road except to get it home from the auction a couple years ago with nothing on top of it . With impliment tires on I kept the speed down below 25 .

Best i had were Dearborn, david bradley and john deere. Sold the john deere but that was nothing to do with the brand. Getting ready to rebiuld the front of the dearborn as it got in bad shape from sitting out for years. When i get shed put up to store in i wouldnt mind having another dearborn or two.

Tim,

Not sure what you have to do the front of your gear, but I recently picked up a set of Dearborn gear that has one odd hub and I am trying to find an original. Have you had to replace one? Any idea where I might gear one?

Thanks.

I have several, from ford, Allis, New Holland and others, but hands down the EZ-trail gears seem to be the best I have had. But my other brands are all older and difficult to fix and get parts for and most times not worth it. I just go and buy brand new EZ-Trail gears now for around $1500 each.

Minnesota are what I use for my round bale wagons. I have an 8, 9, and 10 ton gear and they have been very good. I have one 8 ton Columbus, and it is ok, but in it's defense, it has seen many miles. More than the MN gears for sure.

Horst and Dion have been the best around here. Looking at a 16 ton Horst with a 30' rack now to replace an old homemade round bale wagon for hay and liquid fertilizer tender.

Have three Bradford gears under gravity boxes, all at least 25 years old, and no trouble at all. I have a few David-Bradley gears, two under hayracks, which seem no worse than anything else. Linsday also seems to hold up well.

Over the years I've had all sorts of wagons. All of them were bought at auctions. I gradually have found 4 E-Z Trail gears and sold all the others. They are as good as it gets IMHO.

Have run EZ Trail, Coby (old), Kory, Pequea, John Deere (old), Meyers, H&S, Case (old), Gehl and probably one or two other brands. None deserved to be bad-mouthed, considering age, weight rating, etc., but I'd have all EZ Trail if I had the cash to do it. H&S probably the hardest to back up, though.

The best ones we have on the farm are all older Better Bilt gears. We've got 4 of them off the top of my head, 3 are under hay wagosn that are used quite regularily. They can all be pulled 65 MPH+ empty, and when loaded they all pull well up to 35. I won't go any faster than that with my truck, and even 35 is pushing it with a load like that.

The worst we have is an old JD gear that needs to be tightened up. The neighbor's have a pair of Miller chopper boxes on much newer JD gears and they pull great.

We've also got a Cobey gear that is pretty loose in the steering, but still pulls ok, and another gear that doesn't have a tag or anything on it that pulls ok but the stretch is bent a little.

Then we've got an Oliver gear built by Electri and it pulls pretty good. We've got another Electric gear I got last year, but I haven't gone through it yet to put a wagon on it.

Forgot to mention our Gehl 970 is sitting on a Knowles gear and for it's age (considerably newer than the rest) it trails pretty bad. have another older gear under a Meyer's box and it trails about the same as the gehl box does, but it's seen a few more years of use and it's expected.

I have a bunch of wagons.
Pequea under the round bale rack. Great.
Farmco under a bale box. So-so
Dion under a bale box. Great
JD under a bale box. Great
Central Tractor (builder unknown) under a bale box. Good
Gehl (made by Knowles) under a bale box. Tightened up but still so-so
2-New Hollands under gravity boxes. 1 good, 1 bad but it"s twisted
1 A-C (made by Electric Wheel) under a gravity box. Good
2-Electric Wheel under gravity boxes, so-so. Steering different than A-C version.
1-JD under a gravity box. Great

Worst wagons gears I"ve had were Dearborn, David Bradley and Grove. Friend of mine has all his bale boxes on Stoltzfus Well-Bilt gears that trail great.

Horst is the best I've run.
The bad ones here were so bad the manufacturer felt it necessary to not install their name on the gear...

What's wrong with Jadco? Ihave two under NH 181 Gravity boxes and I like them. I pulled them home one behind another 200 miles at 55-60mph. Tightened them up and went. John Deere might have the best.

We had jadco under chopper boxes in mid 1960's. Tie rods would not hold up. When turned too sharp (by hired hands) front ends wouldn't take much abuse.
Hey Luke, where are you from? I believe Jadco gears were made in Cuba City, Wisc.

Macco, I'm just north of Springfield, IL now but I grew up SE of Freeport and thats where the wagons came from. Dad is machinery jockey in Forreston. I've heard all different places they were made. Last I heard was Dubuque, IA. Someone also said they were part of NH at one time?????
