I'm thinking of putting a tube-style round bale grabber for plastic wrapped bales onto a 3pt hitch. Has anyone seen this done? Seems like a hydraulic cylinder for a toplink would help get the bale up off the ground for moving it around to where I feed.

whats wrong with just using a three pointed spear type bale mover? it sticks in the end of the bale or are you talking about a bale in a bag type thing. no mattter you need to unwrap it to feed it any way. seems like grabbing the bale around it would interfer with unwrapping the bale.

I have a 3pt spear, but it is a bit bigger diameter than they tend to be now, so I end up chasing bales around to get them on it. Also, the bales are stored on end, so they have to be tipped over to get the spear in.

I've been using a choker chain and dragging them on the snow, but the bales are often not quite cylindrical, and the chain either falls down or slips off the top as I start to drag.

I'm considering a few spikes attached to the choker chain to hold it in place. However, my wife does a lot of the feeding, and a hydraulic solution seems worth exploring.

i assume the bales are in a shed if they are stacked on end. i don't understand the reason for that. can you not push the bale you want into a post or another bale and fork it. i use to have a fork lift truck type of bale handler that slide in under the bale to pick it up. you had to be good to use it or it would slide all over the place with you. just wondering if you could make you a three point hitch jib to go on your tractor that would just stick down in the top of the bale and let you pull forward and pull the bale over on its side. if you could do that once a week you could get enough of bales laid over to feed on for a week or two. ever thought about cutting the spear off and welding on a smaler one. ok i'll shut up now.
