All, I am looking at planters to pull behind my 8N. I have found a few (JD 246 2 row, MF 39 2 row, Ford 309 2 row and Cole 12Mx 1 row). They are all close in distance and price. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each. I plan on planting Corn, soybeans, sunflowers and possibly pumpkins.

Thanks in advance!

we have two JD 246's on 38 iinch rows. plates are avail on ebay and at linclon ag. most of the time the fertilizer hoppers and drives are gone but with a little tinkering, plate planters are pretty easy to use. we plant corn, sunflowers, and milo. we use a JD Van Brunt FB drill for wheat, buck wheat, and millet. the 8n with a two row planter is pretty agile in tight places.

what type of cultivaor do you have or going to buy. that might make a diference as to where you buy a one row or not. cultivating small plants on a hot day is no fun - one row at a time. you can always just put seed in one hopper on a two row planter to plant things like pumpkins where you might want to spread the rows apart a lot.

I've got a Cole planter for pumpkins and squash and it works great. You can get plates and different gears to change seed spacings pretty easy.Been using a JD 290 for sweet corn for years and if I could get a hydraulic lift fixed up for it it would be about flawless. Also bought a 3pnt Allis planter from a neighbor last year. Not so impressed with it.

Check them all out to see which ones have the most plates available from the owner. Teh check out lincolnag.com to see what amkes they all sell for. The JD will always have plates you can buy. The others,..... not so much.

All kinds of Ford and IH plates on ebay all the time. Probably more IH plates than any kind.

There's a good many IH plates on EBAY, but no where NEAR the number of "type B" plates. That's what fits Deere plate planters as well as a few other brands. They're like ants at a picnic.

I saw 15 listings for JD and 14 for IH plates. Not that it matters, but seems to be plenty for both kinds as well as some for others.

I found 22 Deere/20 IH listings. Long and short, there's a boat load of 'em out there.

Yep, I got an uncle that keeps trying to get me to give him some of my IH plates, says he can't find them anywhere. I showed him ebay one night, and he wanted me to bid on a bunch for him. I have had experience with him before, so I said OK give me what you are willing to pay for a set, and that was that. Haven't heard about them since.

All 3 WERE good planters in their day. Now that they're old and used, it's all about which one is in the best condition. The Deere planter will be the most common and easiest to find plates. 309 Ford fairly common in some locales, plates easy to find too. #39 MF parts still backed up by AGCO/MF and a very good planter. Look on EBAY for plates or Google LINCOLN AG. They sell new "Lustran" (plastic) plates.

I had a 309, and the plates were pretty expensive. The jd70 I have I can get plates real cheap.

That Ford 309 is a good one....tried to buymy neighbors but they'd rather let it rot.

I'd latch onto an old IH if I were you...easy to convert to 3 point if you wish....I did just that, years ago. Plates are plentiful on ebay. They are dirt simple in construction and I don't think you can wear one out.
