I need advice on a planter for a large vegetable garden. I have seen the planet Jr and the JD 71 planters. What type seeds can you plant with the 71"s vs the planet jr? Also is there anything special I would need on the 71"s for smaller seed? Thanks

#71 Deere units are about as good as it gets. Once upon a time, Deere offered a small seed unit that fit inside the #71 seed hoppers. They would handle the very smallest of seed. You can get blank plates and cut cells with a file to handle smaller than the standard corn, bean,sunflower, ect, plates.

Planet Jr planters will plant the very smallest of seeds. Only real problem is you can't adjust seed spacing, only seed size. I've got a 4-row planter w/ #71's. Also have a single row Planet Jr. (It's for sale. email left open if interested)

Find you an old IH planter. None work any better for garden planting. Plates are available on ebay all the time. Parts are still available for most of them. The IH 251 3 point 2 row is an excellent small planer. They sell cheap at auctions. The Ford 309 is also very good, but bring more money. Send me an email, and I will send a picture of the 251 to you.

Have used both those in garden plots with mixed results. Usually got it very thick with Planet Jr. and almost too thin with the JD unless you change gear settings some. For the JD 71 seed plates and bottoms for milo seed will work for okra and smaller seeds. Corn or bean plates of different sizes work for the rest. I rebuilt some old Dempster planters and found plates for them cheap at salvage yards and use those in garden now. Modified some of the corn plates for pumpkins too.
