bush hog smoking

while whacking some trails today my bush hog started burning(smoking).Thr white smoke eminated from the pto ?clutch? where the pto is bolted onto the bush hog gear box.I had been going over some trails that were made this fall with a Tigercat 760 drum grinder that left some shredded stumps 6-8" high. Things seemed to be going o.k. then I saw the smoke.It still seems to cut and not be heating up at least under light loading. What damage did I do to this pto shaft/clutch/bushhog? I"m using a ford 7000(85 horse) with a 7" deck "Bush Hog" brand brush hog.

my "squealer" has slip clutch rather than shear bolt as the PTO protection, fairly simple setup, 2 plates with clutch disc in-between, spring-loaded thru bolts to adjust slippage

if smoke was actually coming from the slip clutch, you should be able to add some tension to the thru-bolts and be back in business, it should just slip a bit when you get into really heavy stuff

in real heavy stuff only cut 1/2 width or drop down a gear and keep rpms up where they belong

check oil in gearcase, hot bearings can make smoke too, lot more expensive to fix that

its sending up smoke signals. its telling you you need to run a bull dozer through there with a root rake on it first and then keep it bush hogged.

That's your slip clutch. May just need adjusting. Look in your manual for proper torque setting on the clutch springs. If you really smoked it up good you may need new friction discs now.
