Hi everyone,

It's ben awhile. I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Years.

After a real hard 2007 and what is becoming an impossible winter, we've decided it was time to let a dream go and sell the farm and all the equipment. We've sold all but one of our horses. Most of the cattle and we still have most of our farm equipment.

I have a John Deere 2 bottom 3pt hitch plow, NH 269 Baler, New Idea 512 (12 foot) haybine, John Deere 7 ft snowblower, Massey 1135 tractor and a few other things kicking around here.

If anyone is looking for something. I just might have it. We're going to be selling our home, so everything has to go real soon.

Everything works excellent and is very well maintained.

We're just another farm going out.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. I know your pain. I had to give up our dream about 3 years ago. I too am in New York State. Property taxes doubled in 7 years and then I was going to be reassessed and I said ENOUGH!

Best of luck in your new adventure. Some say that everything happens for a reason. Hopefully, there is a good reason at the end of your road.

PS. Vote for the politician that supports the least amount of taxes and that is all you can do! I cant wait for the next TRUE HARDCORE CONSERVATIVE to show up! Heck JFK was way more conservative then ANYONE running for office now! My father was part of the Bay of Pigs Invasion and got to spend 2 years in one of his Prisons after he was wounded and captured so for me to say that JFK was conservative in comparison to what we have running now is saying a lot!

Why don`t you just call your senator for help? To here her tell it, she`s got the answer for everything.

Some places are better for farming than others. You might want to consider the midwest. Locally taxes on 510 acres are about $1 an acre. Corn is around $5 and beans about $12, cattle, sheep and hogs are not bad if you direct market them to the consumer. As for horses, was offered one Friday for $50, turned him down and the price dropped to $0. He was still way over priced in my opinion. Somebody will take him and turn him to a wannabe rancher for a tidy profit, but they may wind up with a broken arm or leg first. Ah well life ain`t always easy, but it should always be fun.

Trust me, I have contacted the Senators office many times. I should copy the letter they sent me (after blowing me off time and time angain) and post the on here.

Our government could care less if farmers make it or not.

Look at the crap we have running for President. Is that really America's finest? I wouldn't want to see a one of them in the Whitehouse.

Sorry to hear about your decision, but I respect it. Hope everything in your future goes well for you and your family. I personally get quite sad when I read about people having to call it quits at farming, comes from seeing my uncle have to sell half of my grandfathers farm, along with all the cattle and the machinery back in the mid 80's. Wish I had your 1135! I am busting into crops and some cattle currrently and really hope I can some day get about 150-200 acres. Thats as big as I want to go, in this area, once this place succombs to development I will be buying alot more, far , far away from here. God Bless You.

I think more and more about it every winter. Not because I have to,just wonder why I bother. The wife heard about a rehab center in west Tennessee where she said she'd like to work. Tell ya the truth,we'd both rather be down there in the hills than up here in the frozen north raising cattle. One of these days, recon we're just gonna pull up and do it.

What's happening here has already happened in many other countrys. Large loans and Govt. programs to get farmers to keep going so far in the hole that they eventually have to sell out (cheap) to these crooks. Bottom line is , the people with the big money , ie. oil co. , insurance co.s you know who they are because they control the world even now , only have one more frontier to control and that is the very food that everyone in the world has to eat. Once they own the land we will basically have a dictatorship just like the ones that our young are now giving their lives to abolish. Once they have bought everybody out and start putting on the pressure and penalties that a dictatorship does then there will be the inevitable uprising and civil war will follow and then , maybe , we can clean house and start all over. Some say the Lord is gonna do this for us. I believe He's gonna let us fight this one for ourselves. He's got a bigger plan for down the road further yet to worry about.

Why should the tribes have to pay any property tax? They didn't ask for us to force our way of life and beliefs upon them. Talk about peolple that took the big screwing. Tribal lands are seperate nations, and don't owe taxes that we do. We should be paying rent to the tribes.

If they are separate nations why don't the old folks and the people who have little money and the
people who can afford to throw their money away, why don't they need a passport as they would to
go to Canada? Why did the NY State police have to
go onto the reservation up in northern NY a few years ago to keep them from killing each other?
Why do the city of Oneida Fire trucks go on the
Reservations to fight fires?

Dave, I don't know the answers to all that, but they are considered their own nations. For the most part are governed by their own people. It is my opinion that they deserve any and all help they can get. After all they lost everything due to the greed of us white folks. I have an old army buddy who is full blooded Apache from the Mescalero trbe in New Mexico. I can go on tribal land and hunt any species there with only permission of the tribe. Do not need any state or federal hunting license or tags. Soon the cock fights will all be held by the nations, as our laws which prohibit them everywhere except KY do not apply to the nations. Study up on the trail of tears and see how they were treated. They deserve any and everything they can get from us. The Cherokee tried to comply to white mans ways, and were still forced west of the Mississippi.

Hi George, People forgot about history on how we treated the Native Americans. That was one of General Custer's idea to kill off the buffalo and starve them out. Guess he got a lesson in guerilla warfare at Little Bighorn. We had to learn that from them too. No snow in MD so far.

Hi Hal, Custer was an arrogant self centered SOB. Got his men killed because of it. His scouts told him he couldn't win that battle, and he refused to wait on the other regiments to catch up to help fight the battle. Wanted all the glory himself. BTW, he was never a General. He was an acting General for a while, but his commissioned rank never exceeded LT Colonel. His grave marker reads LT Colonel George Armstrong Custer.

George,
You sure know your history. I agree with your Custer comments. There is a marker at the battle scene showing "about" where Custer died; he and his troopers were hastily buried at the scene, then later his body was moved to the military cemetery at West Point, NY.

Yep, they gave him a hero's funeral at West Point, but didn't mention that he killed women and children at Black Kettles village. Then he claimed he killed so many warriors, when in fact none were there. Mostly woman, children and a few old men. Some hero.

History has been, and is one of my favorite subjects. I still read everything I find about our history here in this country. History and VO-AG were the only two classes I looked forward to in school.

Land and goverment taxes are going up every year it seems. I guess they don't understand that farmers can't live on bread and water alone..

On top of taxes and fuel, the utilities have taken a large rise along with everything else.. It's getting to where you have to have a high paying regular job just make enough money to farm..
Sorry to hear that you finally have to sell out though.. One of these days our need for farmers will out way the farmers we have being able to produce enough food.

I'm in Tennessee. I don't know what the cost would be to ship from NY. I guess it may be expensive..

We're actually planning on moving out of the area. After all the equipment and livestock are gone we're going to put our home up for sale.

I started advertising some of the equipment on this site last night and I'm already getting some responses.

I did however try to advertise a 7 foot John Deere snowblower 3 pt hitch and for some reason it wouldn't except the add. Anyone want it? $350 or best offer. It does need a new pto shaft, the pto shaft sort of walked off while I was away from home. Could use a little paint and some tlc...but heck for $350 it should be of some use to someone.

I'm located in Franklin NY the zip here is 13775

We hate leaving this place.

We shut down the stables just before Christmas and I started selling our horses and cattle. I have two young holstien heffers left. I believe one is 6 months old and the other is 5 months.

One paint cutting horse left.

NY is hard on farmers. The land taxes here are terrible. Forget trying to get any help from the government. We we're having all we could do to pay the taxes last year and this years bill was a little over $1000 more. I have no idea where they think people are going to come up with all this extra money. Our incomes aren't going up.

That's happening here in MD too. When I had this home built 40 years ago the real estate tax was $400.00 now its approaching $4000.00. When the homes jumped up in price several years ago they starting increasing the real eastate taxes. The local papers are full of homes being sold at the courthouse for default on their mortages that were bought within the last 2 years. You have to be indigent to get your taxes lowered. Hal

There was a man in Baltimore that was behind on his real estate taxes and they were going confiscate the home so he burnt it to the ground
and then took his own life. Here in Bel Air they're building on every piece of open ground. You can hardly get through town due to the traffic jams. With all the homes and businesses
they have around here now you would think the taxes would come down. We get less for our taxes than we did 40 years ago. Hal

First of all, sorry to hear of the sellout. Now, back to torching your own house, not quite the same situation, but a very sad story anyhow. Can't remember the exact year, but happened about 3 miles north of Hebron, NE. Elderly gentleman, who outlived his first wife, then remarried, was pulling out of his driveway for the VERY LAST time possible when he pulled right into the path of a semi, killing them both. Why? Because the next day, state was going to doze the house for the new 4 lane. He told them he didn't have anyplace else to go, state told him they paid him enough to buy another house. Sorry part is, after the road was built, they ended up going west of the original plans and missed the now non existant farm house by maybe 100 yards, not as much driveway as original, but I would think still enough. Our government at "work". DOUG

My late brother-in-law bought a 50 acre farm in western GA near the AL border. I think the town was Douglasville. He thought that Interstate highway from Birmingham to Atlanta was going to pass thru his farm. It missed it about a mile. He died and my sister-in law sold it. She wishes now she had kept it and moved from FL back to GA.

It was probably worth a lot of money since it was near the Interstate. I don't know what she sold it for. Didn't take long to sell it. Hal

If you think that taxes should go down because of housing construction, then you are buying the lies spread by the construction industry.

It is well proven that residences require more in governmental spending than they pay in taxes. More houses mean more spending which means more taxes. Finally some government officials are starting to do the math, but usually after it is too late.

Add to that the lack of labor. Mexicans are all getting scared and running home, and no US workers want to do farm labor at any price where they are worth a d***. Had a few come up the lane, and all they did was complain, work for two days at most and never come back.
