Opinions on two round balers needed

Happy New Year Everyone,

I need some advice please. I am thinking seriously about upgrading from my old NH 850 chain baler. I am looking at a Vermeer 605K and a New Holland 660. Both are around $10,000 dollars and appear to be in good condition. All belts look good, they appear to have been shedded etc. I only roll about 300-400rolls a year so hopefully it will last a long time. I have good dealer support for both balers. Which would you recommend and why. Also, are there any specific points I should inspect, other than the obvious, with respect to each baler. Thanks in advance.

Have no experience with Vemeer, but run New Holland. Some points to watch on New Holland. Check the gears on the rollers. If they are wore excessivley, you ar looking at a baler that is a potential money pit. Its probably been run in dusty conditions, and all the bearings are probably wore, pickup is wore, sidewalls wore, you get the picture. Not to mention, working on those rollers is heavy and hard work. Look at the rollers. If they are wore smooth, especially the floor roll, it will be a bear to start a roll, especially if your in a slick crop like straw. Only way to fix it is to either use a gritty paint or weld beads on the floor roll, maybe on upper rollers if really bad. Check the belts. Look at the splices for stress. Had a baler that kept pulling splices. Got to the point where me and another guy could resplice and thread those belts in less than 10 minutes. Turned out belts were two foot short. Check pickup for excessive play, missing teeth, wear on pickup. Check all the chains, belts and cables, and bad bearings. Check twine arm drive for excessive wear. Then, If it checks out, consider it, otherwise, save your money. HTH.

I've got a NH 664 which is just slightly newer than the 660. I have Autowrap, not the Bale Command. I love that baler. Hard to plug, makes nice tight bales, and if I'm using a rake, it can swallow a windrow that is unbelievable. Minimal maintainance so far after 3 seasons and 8000 bales.

We have a 660 NH baler and we also had an 850 NH that we traded in on it. When we first got the 660, I didn't like it. We had a lot of trouble with the "Bale Command". It just would not work like it should. It wouldn't let the arms down to tie the bale sometimes it wouldn't bring the arms back up, Seemed to be something on it all the time. The next year, we baled with a tractor that had an air-conditioner. Getting the "computer" inside where it was cooler and cleaner seemed to help. I like it now. We bale 2000-2500 bales a year with it and have only had to replace 5 bearings on it. Have had it for 8-10 years maybe. We replaced the belts for the first time last spring. If it is in good shape it should last a long time for you, although $10000 sounds like it is overpriced. I think decent ones around here are about $6-7000.

You should be able to purchase these balers in the $6,000- $8,000 range. Heston balers of the same vintage are good balers as well and can be purchased in that same price range.
The bale pictured is listed on webfarmer.com for $6,000.

I have no experience with a NH baler, but I have a NH sileage blower I like until it needs parts. I also have a Gehl blower and the same parts for it cost half of what ones for the NH cost. I had a Vermeer 605 F for 10 years and got along good with it. The only reason I have a JD 535 now is because I got it cheap on an auction. I like the 535 but I had to mount another tool box on the baler tractor for metric tools. I think the Vermeers are still non metric. The dealer support from my vermeer dealer was excellent they always had any part I needed, I could get it about any time of day, and gave very good advice on fixing and operating. Lee

Cousin has a 605 k and it has given good service. Look carefully at construction of the 2 balers, my experience has been that NH is designed well, but is a little light in construction. Don't know about that baler, though. Vermeers are well built of thick materials. Vermeers do use up bearings occasionally, don't know about NH. Hope this helps.

I have a 605K, had it for 2 seasons now, had a 605F before that for 15 years. I love my K baler, I have used it to do some custom baling. I have rolled grass hay, corn stalks, milo stalks and did a good job. Mine does not have netwrap or the autosteer.
Thing to think about is dealer support.
Look at the belts, and wear on chains and gears etc.
If I was looking for another baler, I would go with Vermeer again, I do wish mine had netwrap on it.
If you do get the vermeer and you do not have a manual and parts book, just give Vermeer a call with your serial number and they will send you out a operator manual and parts manual for free.
