Hey guys, I bought one of these some time back and have finally started doing some stuff too it to get ready to use it. Gonna have to change the bearings in the conveyor in the bottom of the mill for sure and a few belts.
Does anybody know where there might be some screens to fit this, mine only has 2 with it. Looks like a 1/2 inch and maybe a 1/4 or 3/16.
Looking for any tips and advice on running this beast. I've never ran one before but am looking forward to trying it.

Inch or 1-1/4 works good for ear corn. Never tried hay, hear it is s l o w.

Jay Dee belts sent me the belts for mine, seem like good belts, I assume a lot cheaper than OEM.

Often overlooked is checking the oil level in the gearcase under the tank. If the unloading augers are gear-driven instead of hydraulic- make sure those bearings are good, and lubed. Not fun to change. Screen? The two smaller ones are for grinding for hogs, bigger one for bovines. Half inch doesn"t give small enough particle size for hogs.

I brought this up one other time but I will again.

If your comparing a Gehl screen size to a artsway or new holland there is a difference.

Gehl has twice as many hammers as artsway and others.

So a 1/2 screen in a Gehl will grind as fine as 1/4 in an artsway.

Raised hogs for 25 years using a 9/16 screen in a Gehl and it was always a fine enough grind.

Was almost powder. And that is to fine for cattle.

With all due respect- you lost me when you said it is fine for cattle. Started farming in"72 with a Gehl 65 MX, then went to a Lorenz 100, then a Gehl 95 in the 90s. "72, with milking cows, feeding hogs- two different screens. Put up the Harvestore grain unit in "77 with a roller mill for the cows, still ground dry corn for the hogs- small screen. No way I will believe that you get full utilization out of corn for hogs when you grind it with a screen that big. Hogs are single-stomached animals- they need small particles. One pass to utilize..... cows have four stomachs to recover the nutrients. Powder is never fine for cattle. That is when they founder, or die!

I better explain better. When I used the word "fine" I mean not course.

So it is ground to "fine" or to small for cattle.

May have been a poor choice of words on my part.

What are you grinding and feeding it to?

The 1/2 screen will work for corn for hogs when grinding shelled corn.

For cattle and shelled corn I pull the screen out and just run the corn thru without a screen.

Local Gehl dealer should be able to get screens and belts and any bearing shop can get the bearing.

Yea, I figured that on the bearings and belts but was hoping to locate some used screens.
I'll be feeding to cattle and will probably be grinding corn, alfalfa(if I can find it otherwise just hay), mabye oats, milo, or whatever. I'm new to this so the skys the limit. lol

We used a Gehl mostly for pigs or just grinding grain or making a grain mineral mix for cattle. Like said you can only feed that one small flakes of small hay bales very slowly. A Wetmore or later United Farm Tools or Bearcat with the hay bale feeder recutter works better if you want to grind hay but there are lots old used tub grinders out there now too for that.

I wouldn't get too excited about grinding hay. Like he said, that 1/2 inch screen is right for corn. Even with a 1 inch or bigger screen, you throw a bale flake of hay in that thing and you're gonna think the world is coming to an end. I've got a JD 700 with a hay attachment,a conveyor that feeds a bale in,and I don't use it. What's the sense putting you're grinder through that kind of abuse and taking up bulk in the grain? Just feed the hay whole seperately.
