Tractor for Baler

Ive been told that in shoping for a Older model tractor, Ex. JD 70 not to buy one that is two cylinder for use in running a baler becouse they tend to be hard and or break the u-joint pins when they engage. Any one hear of such a thing.. any help would be appreciated..thank you.

I haven't heard that. What used to be said about the JD 2 cyls was that they reacted to their governors more slowly as the PTO load changed. A 4 or 6 cylinder engine tends to be noticeably more responsive.

It's hard to say anything against the JD crowd, but back when, it seemed like people would use Oliver 77 and 88's for PTO work, when they weren't using WD-45's and D-17's.

Have heard it said the power impulses of the 2 banger can be hard on PTO shafts, but have seen and done a lot of PTO work over the years with 2 bangers and not had any bad problems. HB

The fact that JD made a pretty good line of PTO hay balers and other equipment at the same time they were still building 2 poppers kind of suggests that they had the big problems handled.

I suppose a guy could be uncharitable and say something like, If it'll stand up to a 2 popper, nothing else will hurt it. But I won't.
