I am always having problems keeping the roller bearings that ride in the cam track of the pickup replaced, and trying to find replacements is hard to do too. Has anyone ever tried to modify their balers to accept a different roller, for instance, a roller off of a New Holland baler. I have never had to replace any of these bearings so far on any of my New Hollands. Thinking seriously about experimenting with 2 of my parts balers, a New Holland and a MF 10. The MF already has the windsheet removed and the New Holland was made to change out easy. Any ideas or any stories, or any advice, or any thoughts on this will be appreciated. These MF Balers, a model 12, and two model 10's were orignally bought new for the University of Georgia's campus in Tifton, Ga. Known as ABAC. The balers are in extremely good shape for their age with the pickup assembly being the only problems I've had.

Thanks in advance; South Ga. Plowboy

We've got a late model 12 and it's never had a problem with those bearings. It's got the wheel mounted on the side of the pickup though, and a rod that you put a safety pin through to hold it at a certain height. Hardly ever digs into the ground, only if there's a skunk mound in the field or a really bad dead furrow.

Thanks, Donovan: I might try to put wheels on them. Makes sense what you and Chuck said. We don't have shunk mounds in our fields, but we do have armadillo mounds that turn into holes after my Jack Russells discover them. We have "Polecats", that's a southern souped up version of a Shunk I guess, but they prefer to nest in the woods down here. Anyway, it makes sense that the "L" shaped bracket is bent from the skid shoe catching on the side of an obstacle from time to time. Thanks, Don!

Hi, The problem is not the roller. The original
problem is that the pickup is riding too heavy
because of lift spring not being tight enough.
Then the L shaped arm that holds the cam bends
as the skid shoe puts too much pressure on it.
Then the cast kidney shaped cam wears because the
bearings are not running to depth in the cam. They are running on the edge. If you look you will notice more distance between the bands of
the outer pickup teeth. The L shaped arm needs to
be straightened, the cam inspected, and roller
replaced if bad. We used to convert dozens of them to a NH pickup wheel.Only had to drill one
hole. The later 12's had a wheel. MF sells the
rollers sep.even tho they are riveted on. Chuck

Thanks Chuck, that's some good information. I'll study the pickup assemblies and compare the 10 to the 12. The 10 has lost another bearing, but it don't have a skid shoe on it, maybe that's why it was removed? I'll check the 12 to see if it can be adjusted to float higher.

Thanks again; South Ga. Plowboy
