I know some of you are on social security and medicare, others are about ready and others are so young they do not think it will be around when they get old. I went on SS at age 62 and in 9 months will be hitting the 65 mark, What do you have to do to get medicare and how do you chose a drug plan. I am curently on insurance from where my wife works and so far she has been unable to find out if they have a medicare supplement plan avaible for when I hit the 65 mark. I take no prescriptions now so how would you chose a drug plan? In 11 days we will be hitting our 30th wedding anniversery

Like you I went on SS at age 62.At 65 SS sent me
a Medicare card and some info didn't have to do anything unless you don't want part B then you have
to tell them and you get a different card. I think
SS sells your name to insurance companies. You will
get several offers for supplemental insurance and
some of them look real official like they are from
the government. WATCH OUT. If you don't here from
SS about a month before your birthday, get down to
the SS office and sign up. You should be signed up
for Medicare before the first day of the month of
your birthday

Go to your local Social Security Office and direct your inquiry to them there for a bonafide answer. My advice .JC

Leroy,
One of the biggest savings in drug costs while
on medicare is to make sure you ask your doctor
if there is a generic equivalent or generic similar drug that is available. You don't need to be paying for those expensive TV commercials.

I am 70 and like Tom said, it is automatic. Your regular insurance company will see to it. They just will not pay first on not at all. You will need to switch your regular insurance to a supplement insurance. That is if you want one. I have not had to use it much but my mother had both hips replaced this past year and with her supplement has not had to pay a dime out of pocket.

I am a retired Social Security Administration employee so I feel what I am going to say is authoritative. If you have already signed up for retirement benefits as you say, you will automatically be enrolled in Parts A and B of Medicare without having to do anything more. You will receive your card about 3 months before your birthday and only have to sign it for it to be valid.

Leroy, Go to the SS. Office and enroll in Meicare Parts A & B! Then you will need a Suppliment, or Medigap plan to take care of the other 20% that Medicare doesn't cover. At this stage your current coverage can be used as your suppliment. If your wifes coverage, goes with her after retirement and it has a good drug program KEEP IT. If not then take a look at a Suppliment plan that will give you the best coverage for the best price,.....with the most guarentees....The Best Is Not Always Cheapest.
Leroy I am a Licensed Agent here in Texas. There are two types of policies Attained Age & Issue Age policies. All policies will adjust premiums based on Inflation. Some will also use Age.
Most companies will send you a Cost of Inflation & cost of New Age rate adjustment every year or two. I know on one where the Age factor is taken out of the equation in all areas, except when the policy is first issued. Like Phisicians Mutual! So the only rate adjustment is Cost of Inflation from year to year.
Now to answer your Question. You are asking about Part D. The drug porition, Which is best for you???? That depends on What drugs you take, Weather,,,, Namebrand or Generic, Cost/Month Etc, Etc. The P.M. Has 3 levels the middle lever has generally but noit always been the best for folks around here, Again a local P.M. agent can assist you. Not all states allow both, Texas does, So I can not speak to your specific State rules and regs, Go visit with a Phisicians Mutual agent in your area.
If you can't find one Hollar at me an I will locate one in your area 512-577-3837. I know there is a lot of info for you to digest here, but you need to be on top of this decision here or it could cost you big for a long time to come. Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

I turned 65 last year (May) and it seems like I was showered with mail from insurance companies about 6 months prior to 65th birthday. I had BC/BS for past 31 years, and if I remember right, they have a Medicare Supplement called Plan 65, but being retired military, I chose TriCare. Since you are already drawing SS I think they will automatically start you on medicare when you reach age 65. I also started drawing SS before age 65. Good Luck!
