My old computors are about past. My windows 95 died last spring and this one, a windows 98 is about ready to die. My question is what are the programs that would replace a windows 98? My camara called for the 98 as it would not work on the 95 but the camara is still in good working order and my good flat bed scanner is for 98 so what would be avaible that I could still use these things with, also have 3 good printers for 98 and do not want to have to spend enough to buy everything new. And these multi purpose printer-fax-scanner will not work for me as I have to have a flat bed scanner and not something that feeds a page thru for copying, can't get a book thru them. What programs would work for me?

I'm 78 and have been using computers since 1987. First MS DOS, then Windows 3.1 (did not like very much) Win 95, Windows 98 and Win 98second edition which I liked a lot. However, MS is no longer supporting 98 2ed. Then Win ME. I know there were issues for many with ME, but I had no trouble with it. Then Windows XP which I have found to be the best by far for me.
It mostly depends on what you want your computer to do. Gaming (which I do not do) requires a more powerful computer. Simple Internet, word processing, spreadsheet, ordinary photo work, etc., will work well on most presently sold computers. I am using a couple old digital cameras (from the Windows 95 era) that work fine with the XP. I do not connect the camera directly, but use a card reader (cheap). Hope this helps.

Leroy,

If your Win98 computer is really giving you trouble, you could buy a newer machine (not necessariy NEW), and reinstall Win98 on it and the drivers for the printers etc that you have. You will of course need a Win98 install cd, or Win98 upgrade cd and Win 3.1 install disks.

You don't HAVE to buy a new machine, one that is several years old will run Win98 very well. The hard part will be getting all the install and driver software, which probably can be found on the internet since you have brand name printers etc.

This is not hard to do, a little time consuming and having something other than dialup would make the downloads faster.

Find as many of the cd's for the hardware and windows as you can, and they ask for help from someone who knows more about computers than you claim.

x

p.s. Drivers are just interfaces/adapters between Windows and whatever piece of hardware. Things are not standard like the 3pt and hydraulic 'hardware' you are used to.

if youre tired of incompatibility issues with newer versions of lining bill gates pockets with money...try learning how to use Linux...most versions are free and theres tons of freeware out there for it...another added bonus is there arent many viruses you need to worry about.

Vista is the newest version of Windows. It is _very_ uncompatable with old or slightly old hardware. No one is rewriting drivers for it, expecting you to buy new printers, scanners, cameras, etc.

It's so bad, in the business world you can still buy Windows XP. Go to the Dell site, look up a home'office model & it will come with Vista. Look under small business machines, & you will be offered the machine with either Vista or XP on it. Too many incompatibility issues for business to swap over to Vista.

So, if being compatable with your older hardware is prime, Windows XP is still supported & generally works with much of the stuff.

If you want a new machine with the newest stuff to keep it's value as long as possible - then Vista is the way to go. It will not work with much old hardware tho.

Programs that worked on Windows98 should be fine on XP, if you can buy a new computer that has XP. More likely anything you buy now will have Vista. Old programs should work, but you'll probably need to download new drivers.

What is wrong with the Win98 computer? The hard drive dying? Just need to be reformated and Windows reinstalled? Just getting to out of date?

If you was to go with a new(er)computer, get one with WinXP as it is compatable with lots more than the new Vista. While I am using Vista right now I still have issues with getting the drivers and such. I also think XP would be sooooo much faster on this machine.

What printers do you have, what scanner, and what camera? If you give make and model, one of us can look and see if they are compatable with XP

I think most cameras should work with WinXP. Most printers will have XP drivers and if not then many times the Win2000 drivers will work. The scanner maybe the sticking point if there are no drivers for it.

The older windows 95 machine the hard drive went after many years of good use. This windows 98 model from day 1 was nothing but trouble, hard drive replaced twice and never did work as thought it should and was always slower than the older machine even tho it is supposed to have more capacity the CD burner that was installed later never did work; would have to hunt for spects; both bough from same computor shop. The camara is a Hewlett Packard hp 315. The Scaner is a Hewlett Packard ScanJet 3300C and the printers are a Hewlett Packard DeskJet 842C that I am using now, a Lexmark that is setting idle due to ink costs and a Hewlett Packard DeskJet 820Cse for windows Professional Series that I bought for the old computor before it died and the instructions say for both 95 & 98 to replace the Epson Stylus Color 400 that quit working on the 95 and they say they cannot get repairs for. When you talk about drivers and the other stuff I have no idea what you are talking about. I am on dialup and this past spring was talking to the phone company and even tho they have both high speed and cable TV in areas they are never going to bring things out to me and I am 5 mile from their switch.

About me in reply to Leroy, 12-27-2007 17:41:54
I worked at a dialup internet company for 7 years until a few weeks ago when they moved the call center from MI to NY. ANYONE HAVE A JOB FOR ME??

I have used most Windows since win3.1,

95 was ok but quite unstable for me needed constant restarts, 98 and 98se was much more stable but needed a restart at least once a day,

ME most unstable of them all. Always messing up. Went back to 98

XP love it!! Very stable for me. Restart maybe once a week.

Used 98 and 2000 at work. 98 needed a restart at lunch and again at end of day. 2000 very stable maybe better than my XP I use at home.

Got Vista just so I could learn it. I find it to be a big bloated thing that takes to much computer to run it. Seems stable enough though. Just so big the computer runs slower than it should.

I currently have a Dell Laptop with XP and a bought used desktop I installed Vista on.

I find XP to be quite stable, but slower than I think it should be. I'm 70 and have no plans to ever go further than XP with O/S. Somehow, I can't see that new soft ware every few years is an answer to the world's problems as apparently Microsoft thinks.

Yea the only reason I have used them all is so I could learn them and support them at my former job. XP likes memory I have 512M in my laptop. In my desktop I am running Vista and it has 2Gig, came with it or I might have stopped at 1G

Device results in reply to Leroy, 12-27-2007 17:41:54
For the HP 315 camera: I can find XP drivers for it. But no Vista. Also is no longer supported by HP.

For the HP ScanJet 3300C: I found drivers that say they will work with XP.

For the DeskJet 842C printer: Drivers are availible upto Vista from HP.

For the Deskjet 820cse printer: Drivers are availible upto Vista from HP.

For the Lexmark printer: Drivers are availible for most upto XP and only the newer ones for Vista

Argh!!! Don"t believe everything HP says about drivers! I have first hand experience with them and my old scanner (Scanjet 3300C). I went from Windows ME to XP and the Scanjet would not work after downloading drivers. After repeated emails to HP "troubleshooters" with no success, they finally said we'll have a software guru call you and he got my scanner to work AFTER 45 MINUTES on the phone. One day later the scanner quit again. I went through the steps the guru gave me (thank goodness I wrote down his instructions as we talked) and got scanner working again. It quit again! (You see the pattern?) After a few times through this, I said enough and went and bought a new scanner compatible to XP. New scanner (definitely not an HP!) has worked fine ever since.

I did find one site making that complaint about the scanner. But it was the only one I found, so I wrote it off. But if you have had problems also then I will believe it. I went to a Lexmark all in one that can be used as a sheet feed or flatbed

Ok first off sounds like the Win98 is a lemon so no use attempting to keep it going. So might as well upgrade to a new or newer computer. I still would stay away from anything with Vista on it.

You as wondering if your printer, camera, and scanner would work on a newer computer. They will if there are drivers available for them compatable with the new operating system.

A driver is basicly a program that tells the OS (operating system) how to use the devise. Microsoft with their massive wisdom makes it so each new OS, the devises need a new driver.

I will look and see if drivers are availible.

Would (98SE) help or will your computor meet the system requirements of XP? You can go to the MFG. of your peripherals"and download drivers and installing drivers compatable with the operating system taking into account the limitations of the system. CENTAUR

We have Windows XP on all three computers. There is a newer operating system since that one. Doesn't matter....whatever you buy should come with the latest version. You just want to make sure you have the right connections for your older printers and equimpment. Newer computers were using USB when I bought ours and the older style plug ins were getting to the point they were not standard anymore. Newer computers might be moving toward no wires at all...but I have not shopped in about three years so could not swear by it. I do know this new mini stereo I have in the office has wireless capabilities. Kind of slick.
