Land right down the road is coming up for sale.

I am trying to hash out a budget, which to say the least, is difficult. I am a hay guy, but have enough hay ground. I thought about row crops on 20 or 30 acres.

Would $325 for corn and $175 for soybeans in central indiana be close on input prices. Input includes seed, fertilizer, and spraying?

I had 40 acres of beans last year that yielded my about $14,000. Subract from that seed, pesticides, crop insurance and paying my marketing guy and I netted about $11,000. I 50/50 so I didn't have the fuel costs, labor, etc. Corn is going to cost me WAY more than that. I got $3800 in seed cost alone on 46 acres and close to $3100 in N. You're going to be hard pressed to get a 20% return on your 30 - 40 acres after you calc depreciation and everything else. You can knock down a few bucks in N if it is in alfalfa now, but you're going to put that back tilling the ground to get it ready for row crops.

I would figure around $350 for corn and roughly $200 for beans. This would include hiring all spraying and normal equipment costs.

Repairs and equipment ownership spread over 20-30 acres will likely be higher than $75 an acre. Dont forget about drying cost on corn which at 4.5 cents per point at 180 bushels could add up in a big hurry.

Seed $60

Fert. $80

Herb. $40

Machinery and labor $75

Total for corn $255

Bean Seed $35

Herb $35

Machinery $75

Total for beans $145

This is about what it takes here in Iowa to grow an acre of each. And I figured on the high side.

How can you fertilze for $80 on Corn? The nitrogen is more than that in NW MO.

Nh3 here is $670 a ton

I side dress and only use 120lbs to the acre.

So that comes to about $48 dollars.

And I put on about $34 worth of p and k.

I can't help you with input price for your area, but do not forget things like labor & fuel costs in your projection as well. These are often forgotten when making a projected budget.
