Once again, ol' Hugh left out some key information, because it's all about what he DOESN'T know.

The 35/135 Masseys weren't the only raging success the boys from Banner Lane cranked out.

The 35/135 series was a giant success. So was the F-40/MH50/MF50/MF150 series, not to mention the incredably popular 65/165 series. (And we shouldn't forget that at one point, Massey was #1 in combine production with the very advanced for its day, model 300)

My screen name is about my never ending search for NOS/OEM parts to restore what I think is the best 40hp class utility tractor ever built, the MF150. It's essentially a 135 with the front clip off of a 165 grafted to it. Longer wheel base, heavier front axle, better steering, bigger fuel tank, and all the optional bells and whistles of a 135 as standard equipment.

So Hugh. We know you're proud of what you know. Now maybe you should take the time to learn the rest of the story and not assume you know it all.

If you are talking about the Hugh I know on this site, I cannot imagine how you have taken such exception to anything he has said. He is one of the nicest people I have met on here. I guess I just don't know the whole story. You must feel real strong about what you like, that is admirable.

Back to Hugh, I am a IH guy....I think he knows his stuff.

He may well know his "IH". I'm not getting into that. I know my limitations. I don't claim to be an authority on subjects where I don't know my way around. I'm not claiming to be an authority on all things about farming. I have a small place that isn't a commercial farming operation. It's just where I live in the country. But I've been around Massey Ferguson tractors, equipment that would qualify as small even by the standards of 25 years ago for most of my life. I have a collection of Ferguson, Massey Harris, and Massey Ferguson literature and manuals that would fill a barn. I've spent literally thousands of hours in the seat of a tractor. I own a business that has 4 or 5 tractors logging 1000+ hours each during the summer months. (Mowing highway right-of-ways, ect) And with all this, I don't claim to know it all. And I don't claim that I "have a duty to inform the novice" as someone has claimed. But I DO have the same right to post here as anyone. I DO have a right to point out when someone is blowing smoke up someone elses hind end. Like I said in an earlier post, we aren't flying to another galaxy here, we're talking about old trators and implements. This isn't all that complicated. No need to make it appear so to impress someone who doesn't know the difference.

You may not agree with Hugh about disc blades, but I can assure you that in our field conditions, he is correct. An 18" blade worn to 16" is just about worthless. I don't see it so much an issue of curvature, but of disc thickness. They wear thin too ya'know... when they wear thin, they break. I can assure you that not too many make it to that diameter here. They're all smashed and broken by then. I'll take then off by that time, replace the bearings and save the old discs for spares. When the spares are all gone it's time for another update.

The M-F 25 disc is just a disc. I don't think it's any more or any less than any other. It works and it breaks the same as all the others I own. For the record I have 2 trailed tandems (BushHog and Pittsburg), the mounted Massey, and an offest Pittsburg. The offset Pittsburg is by far the best of the lot in terms of quality. The BushHog is second. It's a toss between the other two.
I've seen days here where they were all in pieces.
Also had an old IH tandem that was a very good disc in many ways as well...

The IH gave us more trouble with the frame than anything else. The Pittsburg gave a lot of trouble with gang bolts and discs breaking until I rebuilt it and respaced the bearings. The BushHog lost it's hitch but is otherwise very tough. ALL have their faults.

OK and I am not just trying to get the last word but think about this. No we are not talking about flying to another galaxy...but...A farmer (aka one who earns his living from tratcors and implements) has to know more than just hook it to a tractor and start dragging it around the field. I think Hugh's train of thought is from lifelong learned experience where small, subtle variances or differences can equate to a overwhelming difference when it is time to haul your product to exchange it for $. Farming is a business where the bottom line is thin, thin, thin. So, when he talks of disc wear etc. it is because he has learned what works best to get ground worked to his standards to produce the best product he can. Every farmer tries to do that, some are more attentive to small details than others, just like in every other profession you can name. Some are just better at their jobs. Another thought, if you had a bad disease and went to a Dr., would you want someone that would focus, I mean really focus on how to make YOU better, or would you just want one to generalize and say it aint traveling to another galaxy....get my train of thought here? I have read him detail things that way. I don't personally have the attention span to detail stuff like he can but I admire those who can and sometimes it pays to force yourself to focus deeper. I do not know him personally but he has given me advice and I have read many many of his posts. I would imagine he was (IS) successful, he has time to help dummies like me that ask for his help.

I have had 35, 135, 50, 165 and 2 285's and a 2675 V8(pure junk). None of them were any count except the 35 and 135. There may have been other good ones, but my vote goes with 35 and 135 as the best MF ever built. Massey combines were good, But Hugh only said he thought the 35/135 were the best ever put out by MF, He never said a word about the others, and from my experience with MF tractors I agree 100%. Use to be lots of MF's around here until folks got on a real work tractor, they have all but dissapeared here now. Use to go to Nebraska and SD to hunt pheasants. Seen lots of MF combines, but only one MF tractor the whole time. Mostly JD and IH with a few Case,MM, and AC's in the mix.Most MF sales were overseas, and not here in the states. Our local MF dealer quit selling them and is a Kubota dealer now.

Hugh said the 35 / 135 was one of the best.so do not bash or accuse him of not knowing. I do not agree with him on all issues but he has possibly more seat time than any of us. I have a 165 D and a IHC 574 D. the IHC is far ahead of the Massey in everything except fuel economy and ease of working on. I like the 35 / 135/ 40/ 50/ 150 but the 165 appears more clumsy.

Back to where it all began, they made one fine disk. Lot's of people around here had those MF'ers and every one of them worked on them more than they used them. I can take you to 2 of the biggest farms in the community and show you where red and gray paint was, and green paint does the work now. If you own a MF'er, you better own a big toolbox as well.
