Silage Chopper for Chipper

Has anyone thought about using an old silage chopper to chip trees? I would think that perhaps the design of your average chopper might be similar to that of a drum style chipper. Perhaps the speed of the feed system would need to be reduced.

I have also used a Fox chopper as a chipper.It did a fine job untill one knife broke and jamed on the frame and stalled the tractor. The P.T.O. shaft was not stright to begin with.It had just alittle bit of a bow in it.After useing it the P.T.O. shaft on the tractor started leaking.Did the bent shaft cause the leak? I said it did,but the guy that owened the chopper said it did not.Who knows.Would I do it again?yes,but I would use one with a stright shaft next time.

We've done it with an old Fox. Worked good, but cost us $200 for a new PTO shaft when a chunk of metal was in the pile of scrub we were shredding. Busted a knife bolt, jammed the knife and snubbed the tractor out cold from the engine running at someting like 2200 RPM's. Twisted the driveshaft so it wouldn't telescope anymore....

Other than that one really bad experience, we've done it since and would do it more if we hadn't robbed the blower band off it to go on our newer Fox that we now use in the field.
