Excellent machines. There used to be 499s all over around here and there still are a lot of them in use. The only thing that I can think of that's bad is, if you watch that double reel too long, your eyeballs will go in opposite directions. Check the rubber on the rolls. As long as they have been out there, the pump and motor could possibly be getting tired.

I'll put in a plug for these machines, too. Excellent hay cutting machine - I've had 2 of them over the past 15 years and will possibly trade for another new one in 2008. I'm a John Deere man, but when it comes to my hay cutter, I won't even look at anything else! The simple design has stood the test of time (25 years or more). Just do your homework when looking at a used machine - most of the wearing parts are right out where you can see them.
