OT Lower a 2 1/2 Ton Army Trailer?????

I have a 2 1/2 Ton Army Cargo Trailer that I would
like to lower at least 12", put a wagon hoist on,
and pull with either a tractor or a 1T pickup to load and haul fill dirt, haul brush, etc. This will be used mostly off-road, but ocassionally taken on roads.

If I relocate the axle from under the leaf springs to over the springs, it will almost become a solid axle. I could exchange the 9.00 X 20 tires for a smaller tire, maybe a 7.00 X
20. Both of these changes might do it, but I hate
to lose the suspension if I don't have to.

Cutting the axle and making a drop axle out of it
might be a better if more difficult solution. (These are split rims. I have always used a piece of channel to clamp rims and axles into to
insure fabricated axle alignment.) Has anyone done or had an inspiration about how
to best do this?

I would like to retain the parking brakes and maybe the service brakes.

Smaller diameter wheels. But it wouldn't dump good if wheels were too small (if I'm envisioning this correctly).

sell the trailer and use that money and the cost of a wagon hoist and buy you a used dump truck. hauling dirt and rocks might be a bit much on a wagon hoist to lift, depending on how much you haul at once, of course. if your going to haul a load you might as well haul all you can in one trip the way the price of gas is.

I'm gonna guess you have 5 or 6 hole Budd wheels on the trailer ? You could try 8.25 or 900 X15 lowbed trailer tires as used on heavy equip. trailers. there are 5 & 6 hole wheels that will bolt to your hubs . Check brake drum clearance..... ..
