I am restoring a horse drawn IH no.9 mower and would appreciate any info/help that is out there.
- What does no. 9 mean?
-this particular mower was made in Canada. Was there U.S. production also?
- What approx. years were these mowers made?
- I need (among other parts) the socket end of the pitman arm that connects to the socket on the blade. If anyone has this part or others for sale please let me know.
- Are the colors white wheels with red on the rest of the mower?

#9 may be one of the most common horsedrawn mowers found. Parts are found easily. B.W.Macknair in Lewistown,Pa. has all you'llneed at fair prices.Example: just bought a complete Pittman(wood shaft) with socket etc. and all hardware(both ends) for $65 used. Also a new book is just out on restoring ,repairing and using these mowers.It's helpful.Author:Lynn Miller ISBN 9781-885210-173(soft cover).

Ed, go to Wisconsin Historical Society. They have IH paint schemes listed there. Just google IH archives and click on WHS link search mowers in the box in center and the page with all IH mowers will come up. Red,blue paint,blue laquer and oucher whatever that is . Hardly any old IH implements were ever just one color.

Those pitman parts are available new from IH. New Holland dealers won't have it. They cost about 50 bucks for complete set. Both straps,spring and latch. I think the 9 is the 9th model IHC produced. I have a McCormick-Deering number 1 one horse mower, and was told it was the first model made by IHC. Not sure about the color, but I bet there was some blue on it.

The Small Farmers Journal is a VERY good resource
for the rebuilding of horse drawn mowers. Linn Miller the owner and force behind the journal
recently published a book on nothing but, horse drawn sickle mowers, set up, restoration, models
of mowers, etc. They have a web page where you can find out more information about the books
etc.

I have a no. 9. Daddy bought it used sometime in the 1940s. The 9 is merely a model number. I THINK the previous model was a no. 7. I don't know where it was made. When we got it it was rusty, so don't know about the colors. The pitman rod end is probably still availiable from IH, or New Holland now. The pitman rod end is probably the same on later tractor mounted mowers, such as the 25v.
