JD #5 Sickle Bar and Inner Shoe Repairs

I have a JD #5 mower that I'm restoring for use and another that's for parts. On both mowers, the 2 bolts that attach the sickle bar to the inner shoe have worked loose, causing the bolt holes in the sickle bar to become egg shaped. Also, there's a ridge in the inner shoe that helps to positiion the sickle bar and it's worn as well. Does anyone have any suggestions on repairing these. The shoe is cast, so welding it will require a specialized shop and probably be pricey. The bar is probably tempered steel and I'm concerned that welding it will cause it to lose its' temper. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You might consider �building up� the two holes in your cutter bar with JB Cold Weld.

Drill holes again to 5/8� and use hex head bolts with lock washers on the bottom of cutter bar.

You might do the same with the ridge on the inner shoe and use a rotary grinder and/or course file and shape to fit.

The shoe is malleable cast and is not real difficult to weld. As for the cutterbar I would build it it up and not worry about it.
