TC I agree on putting pin in hole on large rod with cutterbar in raised position. That's a nother good reason to have the cutter on a caddy so one doesn't need to loosen spring when un-hitching cutter. Adjusting spring to correct length is important also. The 617 I had for several years broke the 5/8 in threaded rod several times and NH is proud of it so I just started using all-thread. Mine also broke the large rod on the top of the spring. I found that the loop that the large rod slides through was binding in it's pivot area. Tx Jim

I have been using a 617 cutter for about 3 years in both blackland gumbo soil and in sandy soil. It is a pretty good cutter, but I agree with the comments about the suspension spring. There is a pin that must be placed in the spring shaft with the cutter raised. That makes the tension spring work.

I have had a couple of problems with mine. One was probably my fault when I let the gearbox run dry and burned up a bearing. Luckily, a new bearing and oil fixed it up.

The other problem is the suspension spring set up. It has a heavy shaft on the top end, but the end on the cutter bar has only a 5/8 inch threaded rod with jam nuts. Mine has broken the 5/8 inch shaft about 4 times due to the extreme weight it carries. I hope the fix will be to eliminate any visible threaded rod by tightening it up--jam nut to jam nut.

I also find that trying to cut in moist conditions in the black dirt is problematic. Mud accumulates under the turtles and along the leading edge of the bar. When that happens the grass won't be cut very well. Course this only happens in areas where there are occasional bare spots.

I cut about 1,500 big rolls worth of hay with it this year alone

npuller the NH 617 has a large float sprong that needs to be adjusted according to spec's. If adjusted correctly it will not drag. it also has a modular cutter bar. If buying used check to see if pivot bushings are worn out. These are where cutter bar tilts up. Not cheap to repair. Tx Jim

I have a 615 and love it .It is almost bulletproof.I especally like the dip sticks on every disc for checking the oil.A friend has a New Idea and this is much better .Remember there is a gear box at every disc plus 2 at the drive end.

I don't know about that model but our old 465 never had any problems like that. The worst part with the 465 was hay balling up on the outer end of the frame in a heavy crop. Otherwise it was pretty well bulletproof. The 465 was actually a Kuhn GMD77HD. I dunno who's making the new ones but I's suspect that it's still Kuhn...

The NH617 is not a Kuhn design.

They use New Holland's proprietary modular bar design identical to the 14xx discbines. Introduced in 1995 and pretty much unchanged.

No personal experience, but I looked at them closely before finding a good deal on a different make. They have a lot of good points and are certainly heavy enough . Neighbor has had one for a while and loves it. As to digging in sandy soil, I think that can be avoided by adjusting the top link so the cutter bar runs closer to level. The way a disc mower is designed, I don't think it will dig in anyway. I've never had that problem anyway.
