When did Deere build a slat plow and purpose behind these plows? Saw a 2 bottom plow made by Deere awhile back that had slat shares, a taller steel wheel one one side, both wheel steel but one larger than the other, had a steel tail wheel, and the larger main beam had a number on it of 623. The shorter of the two main beams had a number on it of 583. Pull type trip style.
Can anybody tell me its model with this description? Any help would be great. Slat shares used in wet soil conditions?

The #4 series plows used the 583 and 623 beams after the first #4A plow which used 583 and 584 beams. The most common of these is the #4B plow which , when equipped with steel wheels, used the 32" land wheel and 26" furrow wheel until 1942, after then both wheels were 26". The 4B was built from 1935 thru 1949. The #4 series were all 2 bottom pull type and while they are often referred to as " trip" plows, the more correct term is "ground lift" or "clutch lift" or even "power lift" which was "tripped" by pulling the rope. I say this to avoid confusion with the later "Trip Standards" used to reduce point breakage, sometimes called trip plows. What others have said about slat bottoms being available on many plows is correct. Generally a plow was selected by the farmer and a knowledgeable dealer would recommend the correct bottom style for his conditions. For this reason bottom replacement parts cannot always be correctly identified by just the plow model number.

Most plow manufactures built slat bottom plows. I have a newer IH 420 plow with slats. AC made lots of them as well as IH, JD, and a few others. They work very well in sticky hard to scour soils.

DJD---can"t help you with the year, etc., but the slat bottom was designed for areas where scouring is a problem.

They are used in sticky clay upland soil, black land bottom and clay type soils. The slats provide less moldboard surface to which the soil can stick to.

Huh. If so where can one find a pic of a #4? Searched archvives and looking for more informaton as to years made. What is the difference between a 52 and a 4? The 4 made before the 52 or the same years? Is it the trip gear or design all together? Different hitch? Can one replace slats with other solid shares or did the 4 come only in slat? What is one worth in good operting condition and original? Can anybody be of more help?

The 52 had only one cross brace between the beams and the 4B had 2 braces. They look the same from a distance. The 4B is built heavier. 4B's from '40 on have a large round fluid filled housing with the clutch in oil bath. Hitches look identicle to me. I have the parts manual for the 52 but not yet for the 4B to compare. I have a mint 4B (on 32/26 steel) and a 51 (one bottom version of 52 , comes without tail wheel)and the hitches all look the same to me. Don't know about the points and moulboards. Doubt they are the same. Slats pretty rare , not much call for moulboard plowing in them type soils.

Actually the #52 has three braces between the beams and the #4 has four. The fourth used to support the lifting spring, which the lighter #52 does not have.

B, Cap wheel part number 2584 outside small steel tire, JD 2513 on inner cup of smaller wheel, the big gear housing has a D874A on it, the center brace to main towards the back have a number on it 18435 close to where the decal would of been on the plow (just back a bit) The beams are stated above to orginal thread. Do you have any of these part numbers on the one you have? Thanks. Appreciate the help!

DJD Man; Outer clutch hsng. D 964 A , inner D 963 A. Large wheel outer cup # D 963 A , small wheel outer cup # JD 258 A , crankD 839 a , heavy 1 1/4 rear brace # 18434. Because of interchangability and part # superceeding etc. this isn't the best way to identify a plow model or year. Will post some pics when i get to daughters pc. Mine don't have all the goodies to do this stuff.

B, Thanks for the info on what you x-ref for me. Unfortunately appears to be different in some way. Agree with what you have stated. If you could, would like to see a pic of it. Back to searching again but that plow pic you have for me can answer in my own mind a few questions. Check your e-mail.
