I have a chance to get this planter for $50.00 but it has been setting outside for 4 years. Allboxxes are good and not rusted, but it will need new chains and misc. items. I am not familier with this model. As the picture shows it is a plateless planter. It has disc cleaners but has runners for the seed units. What should I be aware of and are thees good planters or troublesome and not worth the effort? I will only be using it for less than 2 acres.

For less than 2 acres why not just get a 1 or 2 row 3 pt unit. Will take up a lot less room in the storage shed.

Do not walk away from this planter. RUN away from it! Those seed units are a nightmare. I've worked on about 2000 JD and Kinze meters and won't even look at those 1240 meters. Look for a good 4 row 7000 at a sale with clean machinery. If you just have a few acres, getting a good neighbor to come in with his rig is one way to go.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will keep looking. Would really like to have a plate type planter because of less problems. JD 494 or equal.

I would check the seed pickup fingers. If they are all there (paddles like to break off) and do not show excessive wear, you will probably be OK. Sitting for two or more years the seed belts are probably dry rotted and will break on your first round....best bet is to replace them as well as the finger brushes. Good luck!

The 1240 was the first plateless JD planter, precursor to the 7000. Very different model, nowhere the equal. But for 2 acres- you"re not making a living with it- if it plants your corn - go for it. Runners, vs disc, plug up, catch stalks...but for 2 acres- just watch for that!.

I'd look around awhile for one in better shape - you have 4-5 months until corn planting season. It's been sitting there for 4 years (or longer, judging by the rust on it in the picture), it will most likely still be there in a month or two from now if you don't find anything else. In my part of the country (SW MN) there are still a few of these around in decent shape. Even a little-bit-older 494-A in good shape is better than all of the time its going to take to get this one field-ready. I owned both a 1240 (4-row wide) and a 1260 (6-row wide) in the mid to late 1990's. Both of them were in good shape (stored inside) when I purchased them and I still spent a fair amount of time getting them ready at first, replacing or building up worn parts. I even bought another 1240 that wasn't in good shape and parted that one out (that was well worth it for the usable parts I got!) Like the previous poster said, nowhere near as nice as the 7000 series but they got the job done. Even if you spend $300-400 for a good one, the difference between that and this $50 machine won't go very far when you start buying parts! Just put a wanted ad in some papers in your area - you might be suprised at what turns up! And if you have a choice, get one with disk openers - you will be glad you did.

I got runners on my IH 400. No problem planting in plowed cornstalks that have been worked twice before planting. I was kind of surprized but it works.
