Trailer type sickle mowers

After many years of roughing it with my JD #5 mowers I have decided to give up the ghost. I like the mowers well enough but they are getting to hard for me to put them on and take them off. They break down a lot, 'cause they are old, and they usually evidence a breakdown by blasting the pitman all the heck and they are getting harder to get a hold of. Thought I would get a trailer type, belt driven sickle mower. It has to be easier to hook up and I hope the maintenance will be easier. Would get an older haybine but can't find one here that is affordable. Was wondering if anyone had any recommendations?

How does a MF trailer mower rate. Is it up with the rest of them. Red

I have an Oliver 415, has a PTO out the back so that you can pull a hay crimper behind it. Nice mower, no problems in 15 years of use.

That's a good question. I am thinking there are three of them out there but not all complete anymore. One for sure literally came to pieces in the first cutting when it popped a weld. Also have a set of mounting brackets for a JD B which I have never used 'cause we only have green implements until they get all the bugs worked out of the green tractors. You would have to be close because they aren't worth trucking and you would have to be patient because I have to find a replacement first.

My vote for a trailered mower is the IH 1100. The New Idea 521 is identical. We have one of each. This ranch has run IH balanced head mowers since the early 1970's. Currently they cut over 1000 acres per year.

Check the wobble box, the bar where the inside bolt fastens it to the wobble box. Check the breakaway casting where the vertical shaft mounts for cracks. These are areas other than normal wear and tear that fail after MANY HARD hours of use.

Thanks John, I bought a manual from cowman a couple months back for the IH 1100 so I could check it out. Would like to get a hold of one of those mowers since I already have the book and the tractors are all IH. Was hoping someone would say something good about them!

Dave

If you are looking at one, post or email me and I will explain how to check the wobble box to see if there are any potential problems.

John

Thanks John, I have a couple of leads but they are all across state. I'll get back with you if I head out there.

Hey Dave, sorry my comments to your response to my question the other day where rather harsh. Sometimes I write something and wish I hadn't. It is easy to do. I will keep you in mind if I come across any trailer type sickle mowers that are in good shape, they are getting harder to find and then the older haybines are also in real rough shape also and I would think would put you in the category of doing more maintenance on that then the sickle mower.

Hey Ray, don't sweat it! I was jerkin your chain a little bit there too. I could tell you some stories about the local cops, too! Most recently we were at a BHS basketball practice and the wife ran home for something. She saw an accident on the way and called 911 from home but could not get through. Police recorded it as a "911 hang up" and sent officers to the (now empty) house. Police searched our garage and house and left without even a card on the door. Came home to stuff knocked over and out of place. Scared the he!! out of us until we called the police and they came clean. Anyhow, my little hayfield looks like a Mohawk cut because I ran out of pitmans and patience and took what I had and left. No more JD5 mowers for me. Gonna go UPSCALE and get a trailer mower! Thanks for the response!

Sheridan Auction does have a sale this Saturday down in Maybee, which is by Milan. On the sale flyer I got in the mail I saw that there is a IH semi-mounted mower for sale and also there is an older IH mower conditioner as well as a newer Case-IH mower conditioner. It is hard to tell but that old IH haybine might go cheap enough to make it worth it and as far as I can tell those have been pretty good machines, I have seen them go for just $200 before. There is also a JD Hay crimper listed.

I have used New holland, New Idea, and AC. I liked all of them for mowing. The AC will probably be the cheepest to purchase. The only thing I dont like about it-you have to unhook the flotation spring every time you unhook it from the tractor or the tonge will junp up and bite your kneecap. All three are good mowers.

New Holland has good trailer type sikle mowers, you just need hiydrolic hookups to lift the bar up and down.
