Plow for NAA

I recently bought a Ford NAA from a friend. I'd like to do some plowing of some former orchard land where the trees have been removed, so I'll be plowing in sod. Some of the soil is loam, but there is also a few acres of clay that I'd like to do if possible.

I need to learn the basics, but first I need to buy a suitable plow. I have a larger tractor, but I think it best that I start out small, with a single bottom.

Can someone recommend a suitable plow for what I want to do? Thanks

I'll be honest on that plow you posted. I think its way overpriced. I know the 101 is a great plow. But I bought a very nice 2-14 I think the model is 10-14 Ford plow for 200.00 at an auction. I had to wait and hit a couple of auctions but I found a good one at a fair price. The most I saw one go for was 290.00 and it had always been inside. That's been 3 years ago but I wouldn't pay 650.00 for a plow with rusty bottoms and what looks like a broken lift pin with a crappy repair job. If you'd like I'll email you a picture of what mine looks like.

Thanks Ross..too late. We don't have many farm auctions around here, and if you think the Ford plow pictured is bad, you should see some of the stuff that gets sold in Vt. So I don't mind paying a premium to get one I can use. (I didn't pay $650..)

In addition to the 2-12& 2-14 they had a one 16 inch we used on the type of land you have discribed which had a general purpose bottom and weed hooks,coulter and jointer.It is amazing what can be done with this setup.It will push trees down with the front BUMPER at slow speed in low gear and lay the tree down to be covered up by the 16inch bottom up to about 3inch.I have read that ford also had a 18 inch.Ours was a gray(FORD-FERGUSON)-SHERMAN? CENTAUR

IH 420 would also be good, newer than the 209A. If you buy an IH plow, make sure it has Super Chief bottoms with one-piece shares, which are readily available. If it has the 2-piece Plow Chief bottoms (point and blade separate parts) avoid it. Oliver/White plows are also good, but I don"t know model numbers of the 3-point ones.

My 420 was a tad heavy on the NAA. Made it light in the front. Didn't have any front weights. Have plowed many acres with Plow Chief bottoms, and other than expense there is nothing wrong with them. The points will outlast several throw away shares.

The NAA will handle a 2 bottom plow just fine.(2 X12) and even 2 X 14 in most places. I have a 54 NAA that has had 2X14's on it since bought new by my grandpa. It has never had any problem pulling it. The Ford 101 spring trip plow is as good as they come, but will cost 3 to 500 dollars for a good set around here. IH 209A is also a good plow as well as a few others. Massey had some very good plows as well. I guuess some JD plows are pretty good, but the 2 sets I had didn't turn the ground over well enough to suit me. Stood it on edge.

Thanks George, that's a good answer. Do the lands have to be shiny without pits or is it OK if they can be cleaned up? I'm pretty good at telling a worn-out piece from a good one, but any pointers? I like the idea of the spring trip. Things are a liitle stoney in the loam.

They will shine up with use. Just start plowing and after a few rounds the plow will begin to scour. You may have to kick off the dirt that will stick on them at first, but keep plugging alond and they come around.
