Possibly buying a howard rotavator at auction

There's a HUGE junk sale in the area Tuesday and it has 5 howard rotavators on it - an 84", 2 102", and a 130". The pics lead me to believe they're pretty rough. Can anyone give me some pointers on what to look for on a 3 point tiller?

Thanks to all who replied. I did not get any of the tillers. The 130 inch sold before I got there and was parts only anyway. The 102 inch brought 1900. It needed tines - 66X$7=$500 I bid it to 1200 and limped away. The 84 inch had a lot of play in the gearbox, about 2 inches before contact either way. It brought $900.

All in all the auction was a very good one... for the sellers. Considering the condition of the equipment, it all went high.

I own a 5ft Howard to till between my blueberries and it is a great tool. The ones in the pictures look pretty rough to be honest.These things are big,big money brand new. It might be worth a shot if the price is right.

have one like the lower one 100hp tractor is needed and the chain drive case are to thin and weak they bend and then all the oil runs out and then the bearings go out

Hi Marlowe,

Interesting you should mention that as the housing looks like it was the newest part installed. Any other spots that are weak or would not be an obvious place to check?

Horsepower is not an issue. I have access to a 75, 95, 125, and 150 HP tractor.

Check the selectatilth gears in the back of the gear box, check the rotorshaft seals for leakage/chaincase and gearbox oils. A common mistake with these machines is that operators use the depth skid and depth wheel to control the working depth, the depth skid should be adjusted to 1' above the finished work, its purpose is just to lift the machine over obstructions. Carry the machine on the 3 point and the depth wheel or premature wear of the chain case will result. Rotavators are a much abused machine, so go with both eyes wide open, but I cannot think of a better built rotavator than the Howard, some as good as perhaps, but none better.
