What is a fanning mill used for and how do you operate one?

Seed with too much "trash" in it tends to plug the drops on a grain drill.

A Fanning Mill is built kinda like the shoe on a combine to clean the seed up so it is fit for planting.

Allan, I have that exact mill sitting out back (the one in the big picture). Do you have any idea who made it? Been wanting to put some paint on it and tighten it up a little for years but never have seen one that was complete and original.

Cleanning seed.

Crank the handle or plug in the motor.

Short version, bean, oats, wheat, or other seed shakes over a screen, big stuff falls off the back, grain goes through screen. Falls past some wind to blow the real light stuff out the back, seed lands on another screen, shakes to the front again. Small bits fall through the screen to the floor, clean seed is collected in front. Different size screens for different crops, deflector is adjustable to have more or less wind for heavy or light crops.

Good description, Paul. My arm aches now just thinking about turning that crank. When we got electricity there went the crank and on went an electric motor.
