Got an old one from a junk yard(#9 Mccormick- deering sickle).Never used one before. Changed the gear oil and gasket. Greased the zerks. put on a new Pittman arm(it was missing), staightend a few connecting rods a little, new pawl on lift mechanism, put on an entire set of new guards, wear plates, inner and outer soles, inner and outer ledger/wear plates and a newly purchased serrated cutter blade. All parts from B.W.McNair.Wheels "click" nicely when unit is pushed backward. Went to try cutting and the blade seems stuck. What would likely do this? does anyone know proper procedure for removine the blade without taking off all guards?

Unlatch the pitman rod from the blade. Slide the blade out in the direction of the tongue. If you put in new guards and wear plates it should not be stuck unless you put something in wrong. After removing the pitman rod, go to the other end with a large punch and gently tap the blade to see if it is loose. If it is tight, start loosening wear plates, hold downs, and maybe guards until you find where it is stuck. If blade moves freely when pitman rod is released, then there is something hung up in the gear box. Putting some oil on the blade would be good also. When you pulled the mower, were the wheels locked and sliding on the ground?

the wheels appear locked and sliding when the clutch is engaged. The pittman rod and flywheel turned freely when I first started then popped off the ball on the blade. the blade doesn't want to budge(by hand, anyhow).

Then you caused the problem with all the new parts without shimming up the hold downs to where the knife is just too tight. loosen the hold downs and put sone shims (Possibly 2 or 3 made out of old pop cans) under each hpld down untill you with oil on them can move the knife freely without it jumping up and down. After it starts to wear and get loose start removing the shimes one at a time till they are all gone gust keeping the knife where you can just slide it as if you were pulling it out to sharpen it.

Like Patton said at the Battle of the Bulgr," Tanks a million!" The darned blade seems to be hitting and catching on the first (inner) long wear plat edge or shoulder. It slides o.k. with that removed.I may not have had the blade positioned properly berore it stuck.Islid the blade past the edge of this plate and ,so far, it seems to be better.I haven't been able to test it as yet but I will let you know.
