Hello,

Just wondering if a John Deere Horse drawn corn seed planter is worth much? I'm thinking of buying one that needs restoration but have no idea of the worth. Thank you, Joe

you know whats so sad about all this is that stories like the above will soon be forgotten forever. we must share stories and beliefs and truths with our younger generation of people. i think its so true that you can't see where your going until you know where you've come from. i wish that somebody could create a site for just people to write stories in, about things they've been told by their fathers and grandfathers pretaining to how they grew up or was raised or happenings on the farm when they were young.

joe, it depends on the condition its in. i doubt if the fertlize hoppers are on it and they are next to impossible to find. if you could borrow some from somebody you might get a sheet metal shop to make you some. its probably a model 9,99 or 999 depending on its age. does it have a wodden tongue in it? do you have access to one or live near some amish people who can make you one. where do you live. i have one i've started restoring and will give it to you if you want it. i'm in n al. you can em me if you want. its in buckets and pieces, just so you understand. these things can be fun to play with and later in the model years they could be fitted with a 3 pt hitch attachment. i also have 2 orgnal manuals for them and seems like a late copy of a parts list. can't remember about that, but i do know i have two orginal manuals for them. i'd have to sell those. seems like i had 20 a piece in them. good luck

Hi:
My father used a JD number 9 with horses until just after WWII. It was an "edge drop" as opposed to a "hill drop" planter and did a good job for its time. The seed boxes were not removable, so when you switched varieties, you had to hand pick out the seed from the box.

The story he told me was that the 9 was an O.K. planter. For some reason he thought that the 99 was not a very good planter. The number 999 was a good planter but pretty heavy and hard on the horses' necks These were just his opinions.

Depends on model and condition.I have two model 999's and use one plant with. Does a good job. Really like it for sweet corn. Still a few around Good places to find are at draft horse sales.All kinds of these sales in the country. Mine cost from 100 to 300. Hope this helps.
