I just finished rebuilding a MF 150 (gas)and need a brush cutter for it. We have an 80 acre woodlot and need to maintain the pathways through the woods and a few acres of grass(weeds).

How is a stump jumper designed and how does it work. Does it protect the blades or just the gearbox output shaft.

The trick is to run with your loader about 6 inches off the ground so you hit stumps and rocks/boulders with the bucket and not the under belly of the tractor. I bult a skid plate and mounted it to the bottom of the loader frame and made stem shields for the wheels. I use a Kubota L3130 with a Bush Hog 305 cutter

Thanks for the come-backs. The pathways are clear of trees, just small stuff which grows during the year. Really not enough width to use a dozer. Just wondering what a stump jumper was.

nobody has any business in a wooded lot with a bush hog to start with. they will throw chunks of wood a long ways or anything else for that matter. however, i was bushhogging some pasture land that was grown up rather high in weeds and ran the front end on my tractor into a stump. i'm old so i wasn't going to fast, but some body had cut this stump off 2 foot off the ground and i just couldn't see it. it broke the hydaulic lines off my power steering cylinder and i had to pick the tractor up with my front end loader and drive backwards for about 3 miles to get it out where i could work on it. of course this only happened the farthest i could get from the womans yard. to solve this problem i welded a 4 inch piece of pipe that runs across the width of my front end. i welded it to some flat stock that would bend easy and give me time to stop before tearing up something else. i also welded a piece of 2 inch pipe to some braces and bolted it up under the tractor so that any saplings i run over will catch on it and stay bent over rather than fly back out from under the front axle and bop me good. best advice - us a bull dozer with a root rake to clear your path and then keep it bush hogged.

A stump jumper looks like a dinner plate that is attached just under the gear box. Maybe 24-30 inches in diameter. It only protects the gearbox from snagging on stumps. The blades will have already passed the stumps before the center hubs reach it. James
