Replacement Discs for a Dearborn Disc

I have an old Dearborn disc that I am restoring, model Pull-F and s/n 5499. I am trying to find some replacement discs for it. They are 15 inches in diameter. Can anyone out there tell me where I might be able to find these discs, either good used or new old stock? Thanks in advence for any response!

Jim: Contrary to what these guys are telling you there were 15" disk blades on the market as late as 1965, and most manufacturers used them on 5 and 6 foot disks. When I say market, new disks were coming with them. You can still buy new 15" disk blades with 7/8" square hole from CaseIH. Here is the bad news, they are $53. per blade, more money than for a Sunflower with 20" blades.

You can still buy 16" blades your choice of square or round hole 7/8" or 1", and buy them for about $22.

As far as what your blades were when new, one would have to see them. It's not very practical to put worn 18" blades as replacement for 15 or 16 inch. Disk blades loose their concave once 2" is worn off, and they become rather non effective.

I sorta doubt this disc hasn't worn down the blades in 43+ years. More'n likely they started as 16". In any event, 16" are as common as ants at a picnik nowdays. No sense in pay double or triple price if 16"s will work.

The most recent 16" blades I got from AgriSupply were less than $17 shipping included.

Hugh,

I"m curious about your comment that "blades lose their concave once 2" is worn off". Never thought about that before, but it seems quite logical. With the concavity (not sure there is such a word) worn down, the blade edge would be at more of a vertical attack to the soil versus the new blade being at more of a horizontal attack. When working in looser soils, it seems that it wouldn"t be as noticeable. Do my comments make sense? Ron in southern MN.

Ron: They certainly do loose the cutting agressivness. I once got a call from a guy, he'd bought a set of what he thought were 16" blades from a commercial farmer. He was replacing 16" blades not worn that badly but broken and cracked. He complained the disk did not cut as well as it did with the old broken and cracked blades. I took along a new 16" blade as I had my suspicions what he had done. His old blades were cracked and some broken because they were light gauge. His suposedly new blades were much heavier gauge, however they were worn down 18 or 20 blades and the concave was gone. Very noticable when we placed the new 16" blade alongside his blades. His broken and cracked blades were very close to the new one. Good one to watch if your buying used blades. I have some 13" blades in my shop, were 15" when new, about all they are any good for now is put a bolt through 20 of them and use for a counter weight.

Those were 16" before they wore down most likely. Never heard of 15" (new) I bought a set for a Massey Ferguson disc about his time last year through AgriSupply. They shipped "em right to my door cheaper than I could buy locally. They have various gauge, diameter, and axle size/shape. I had "em 4 days after I placed the order.

Shoup has them. They probably were bigger, most are in even inches, like 16, 18, 20" diameter. They normally wear down in size. You need to know the shaft size, usually square but might be round often in the neighborhood of an inch or larger. I don't know where to find them with hex holes. You also get a choice of thickness in many sizes.

Tractor supply should have them, though they may have to order them. You may have to call the store, since it may not be listed on the website, but they do offer them in sizes up to 24"
